Exercise Piece

Julienne Hughes

With spring break quickly approaching, it’s that time of year again where everyone is headed to the gym more than often to, of course, get those legs, butts and abs toned. However, going to the gym may not be everyone’s thing. I think it is important to realize that there are many other ways to get a workout in whether it be just simply going outside for a run, doing workouts in your dorm room, or even taking a yoga class off-campus. Being fit does not mean you have to be a certain size or restrict yourself from eating certain foods. But I do think it is super important to take care of your bodies by fueling them with nutritious foods and doing exercises that will make you feel good and feel healthy inside and out. So, here are some tips and tricks to help you get fit and feel healthy and confident!

  1. Look up workouts on YouTube (YouTube is awesome for workouts either at home or in your dorm room because there are so many videos out there that will guide you through each step of your workout whether you want to do cardio, legs, or abs)

  2. Go for a run/walk outside (Cardio is so beneficial for your body, so by running or taking a walk outside, it gets your heart pumping, and by going out in the fresh air, it almost relieves stress in your body so after your workout, you are left feeling refreshed and accomplished)

  3. Either look up yoga on YouTube or attend a yoga class off-campus (Hot yoga, specifically, is my personal favorite, but there are different yoga classes for everyone that works different parts of the body. Also, if you had a late night studying or are feeling stressed, look up yoga on YouTube before going to bed. It is so relaxing and helps to get you tired before bed, which calms your muscles and mind, helping you to fall asleep faster)

  4. Go workout with a buddy (You can both motivate/push each other, and you’re almost guaranteed to keep up with your workout, since you’re doing it together!)

  5. Drink lots of water throughout the day (Find a cute water bottle, and drink up. Water is so healthy for your body and for your skin, and it makes you feel so good overall. If plain water gets boring after some time, spruce it up with lemons, cucumber, or fruit!)

  6. Stretch (Stretching before and after a workout helps to sooth muscles and won’t leave you sore in the morning.)

  7. Eat three meals a day (I know this can be a hard thing to do, especially being in college and not having time, but I think it is super important to try to keep a well-balanced diet. For breakfast, oatmeal with fruit is quick and easy in the morning. For lunch, have a salad and add lots of veggies and either chick peas or grilled chicken for protein. And for dinner, try having a balanced meal which can consist of having a veggie, a sweet potato or something of that sort, and a piece of meat, whether that be chicken, beef, and so on. As for snacks, bananas and peanut butter are super filling, or eat a mixture of nuts like almonds and cashews. Or even hummus and crackers.)

  8. Get plenty of sleep (Yes, this is almost impossible in college, but set a goal to go to bed at a certain time every night. Make the most of your time during the day, so you can always get a good night’s sleep.)
