Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed by the beginning of a new semester? Professors go over the syllabus, set expectations, and set the mood for the class for the entire semester. If you are anything like me, then this would immediately make you anxious, overwhelmed, and scared to tackle it all. It is so easy to get caught up in all the work that you will complete and immediately freak out. However, I often remind myself that if it wasn’t manageable, then Professors wouldn’t assign it. I like to take a step back and breathe to collect my thoughts. I always try to do at least one thing a day (doesn’t always happen) for myself to keep me going each day and not get burnt out. Here is a list I have compiled over the years as a High School student and College Freshmen (now Sophomore!) that I hope you will find helpful when you need a break for you (and you only).

Listen to music

Music is a great way to relax and unwind. Even if it brings the slightest bit of joy, you are able to tune out the outside world and ground yourself into a song you like. Some of personal favorite songs are Blessed & Free by Kane Brown and H.E.R., Treacherous by Taylor Swift, and Moments Passed by Dermot Kennedy.

read a book

There is a reason people say read a book you get lost in. It drowns out all the unnecessary noise in your life while focusing on this imaginary world that you find yourself caring about more and more everyday. I make it a point in my life to read every night before I go to bed to end the day positively. I am currently reading The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren and some of my favorites are The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls and Far from the Tree by Robin Benway.

Do a face mask

This one seems basic, but doing some sort of skincare or spa self-care can truly be beneficial. It not only provides relaxation and comfort but you are also helping your skin, hair, nails, etc!

Watch a comfort show

Whatever your comfort show (or movie) may be it surely brings a smile to your face. Watching something of your choosing provides a great distraction and allows your mind to take a rest and recuperate. My go to comfort shows are usually some sort of sitcom because I’ll always find myself laughing or smiling no matter what show (if I had to pick one it would be New Girl).

take a walk

Walking is great for those who love the outdoors and want to get some fresh air. Sometimes all you need is a walk ti get your energy flowing again and your mind put back to ease. You can walk with a friend, listen to music, or walk with nothing but the beautiful sounds of nature whispering through the air.

Talk to a friend/family member

This one might seem obvious, but in my opinion it is the most important. Making sure you talk about your stresses and worries may seem stupid but it really is key to get these things off your chest. Whether it is your best friend, your parents, a sibling, a teacher, resident assistant, or even your dog, make sure to let out these feelings. Let go of the negative energy so you can cruise through the semester. I guarantee you’ll be happy you did.

Sending lots of love your way,

Xoxo Kels
