5 Dorm DIY’s

By: Lisa Demerjian

Welcome back Gulls! Hopefully you guys are getting settled in and becoming familiar with campus again. During my spare time this summer I began to get really into DIY’s for my bedroom back home. But thinking now, we could definitely use these ideas in the dorms. Take a look!

  1. Kitchen Organizer

You will need: a space saver ($10 on Amazon, Target and Walmart), paint and some fun colored ribbon.

Most of us know that cabinet space in dorm kitchens are limited but now you can expand your space with a bathroom space saver. Usually space savers don’t come in a variety of colors but you can paint it or use ribbon to make it your own! I took some old Tootsie Roll and peanut tins and covered them up with duct tape and paint. I put my forks, knives and spoons in the new Tootsie Roll tin and put little nick-nacks in the peanut tin.

  1. Memo Board

You will need: hexagon cork boards (3 boards for just $8 at Target), super glue, command strips, various colored chalk pants, scrapbooking paper, and tacs.

Do your roommates forget you’re in class during a certain time? Why not put a memo board in your common room or use it at your desk! Paint the hexagon cork boards with chalk paint, and then let dry. Super glue scrapbooking paper onto any amount of cork boards. Trim the edges of the paper to fit the cork board. Finally lay out the desired pattern of the cork boards and use command strips to hang.

  1. Tie-Dye Tapestry

You will need: elastic bands, tie dye (tie dye kits at JoAnns Fabrics for $10), water, bucket and cloth.

Instagram is FILLED with college girls taking pictures in front of the same old tapestry. How about make your own? Be different and colorful. Get the size desired cloth and wrap a bunch of rubber bands around the cloth. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with water and let the cloth become absorbed. Use the dye to get the cloth filled with bright, beautiful colors. Unwrap the bands and let dry.

    4. Avocado Mask

You will need: ½ of avocado, Vitamin E oil

You try to start your day off right. Wake up early, go to the Post Center to work out, eat a healthy breakfast. Half way through the day you feel a pimple. Try this quick recipe for an avocado mask. Mash half of the avocado in a mixing bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil. Make sure to mix well. Before application of the mask, use warm water and a facial cleaner to open your pores. Then apply your home made mask. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes or until is dry. Rinse off with warm water.

5.    Popsicle Stick Shelf.

You will need: large popsicle sticks, super glue, thin command strips or adhesive tape and foam board.

This is a quick and easy way to create a shelf without spending an outrageous amount of money.

First, pick a shape that you would like to create. Remember a shape like a triangle won’t hold much! For my example I am going to explain a hexagon. Lay out 6 popsicle sticks on top of the foam board. Cut the foam board to size… the popsicle sticks should be flat. Glue the 6 layed out sticks to the board.

The board acts as a sturdy background. Second, keep layering the popsicle sticks. Depending out thick you want the shelf you could be layering at least a solid 30 sticks in total. Let dry. Now you can paint or decorate the shelf and then command the shelf up!
