Why You Should Watch the Super Bowl Even if You Dislike Football

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

With consistently over 100 million viewers, the Super Bowl audience is always one of the largest in TV history.  Clearly, there’s something about it that pulls in people beyond the average football watcher, uniting Americans through sports for one day.  As a formal football hater, here are three major reasons why watching the Super Bowl transformed my views on football. With these in mind, consider tuning in on Sunday!

1.  Socialization

The point of a Super Bowl party is seldom just about sitting around the TV.  It’s about the food, the general themed atmosphere, and the camaraderie that comes with betting and screaming at the television together.  Even if you don’t know what teams are playing, the spirit in the room is infectious. Take it from the biggest Cubs bandwagon fan – if it’s your city’s team, the pride stems from a place outside of an understanding of the game.

2.  The Half-Time Show

With so many viewers expecting a great performance, the half-time show really never disappoints. With consistently shocking and visually appealing graphics, the biggest names in the music industry, and always a few surprises, the half-time show is a must-watch for any lover of music and pop culture.

3. Commercials

Yeah, you could watch the commercials on a Buzzfeed listicle the day after, but it’s way more fun to watch and judge in real time.  The Super Bowl is the only time that when the commercial break is actually just as fun (or arguably more fun) as watching the actual TV program. Plus, laughing with friends is so much better than laughing alone.

Wishing you a happy Super Bowl Sunday, filled with lots of wings, dip, and pizza!
