TikTok Plays Such an Important Role In Our Lives, and Here’s Why

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Almost everyone knows the harsh realities of TikTok addiction. It’s become habitual for me to get on TikTok for just a 5-minute study break and end up sucked in for way too long. And I know I’m not the only one, with over 800 million active users worldwide. This app has dictated so much of our lives, and there’s a bunch of reasons why.

Firstly, I think it’s important to note the timing of it all. Tiktok was popular right before quarantine happened, which was perfect. Because, as soon as we were all stuck at home with nothing to do, Tiktok was there to help us through it.

TikTok gave us a way out, and it lets us have an escape from the boring and unimaginative lives that we lived (and are still living) during the pandemic. It made us laugh when we needed a pick me up, and it made us cry when we were down. TikTok gave us an outlet to feel all of the feelings, and in a short and contained time and space.

Aside from letting us live someone else’s life for a few seconds, there’s also the fact that the videos themselves are relatively short. This helps with those of us who have short attention spans and keeps it interesting. It’s amazing how watching 10 videos can range from 2.5 all the way up to 10 minutes.

These are just some of the many, many reasons that TikTok has been able to provide us entertainment for so long over this past year. Time definitely flies when you’re watching TikToks!!
