Meet Brian Steinberg, a junior in the BBA program concentrating in Strategy and Management Consulting & Marketing. In addition to being President of No Strings Attached (NSA), Brian is also a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Read on to learn about Brian and his role in NSA!
Her Campus Emory (HCE): What is No Strings Attached and how did you become involved with them?
Brian Steinberg (BS): No Strings Attached is Emory’s All Male A Capella group. NSA was the first a Capella group on campus and has been growing ever since it’s founding 20 years ago. I’ve played music my entire life and when I got to school, I knew I wouldn’t be able to function without a musical outlet. I saw NSA at freshman convocation, ran into a member in the DUC, and decided to audition. I really had no idea what to expect. I was actually debating on whether or not I should even try out, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my college experience.
HCE: What is your role as President?
BS: I’m responsible for a few things: event planning, keeping track of finances, fundraising, and leading the board in decision-making. The group performs 3-5 times a month (both on and off campus), so I’m responsible for booking shows, talking with event planners, etc. My position relies heavily on delegation. I have a board of dedicated kids who put in an exorbitant amount of work trying to make this group the best it can be.
HCE: What is your favorite thing about the group?
BS: Every two years, the group travels internationally to promote the University. My freshman year, we went to Panama City, Panama (not the one in Florida). Seven days of singing with your best friends while exploring a foreign country was truly transformative—possibly one of the most memorable weeks of my life. We’re in the process right now of planning our spring trip to Amsterdam, Holland, so I can’t wait.
HCE: Did you have any experience singing before you came to Emory?
BS: I’ve played saxophone since 5th grade and guitar since 7th. In high school I was lead singer of a rock band. We actually got to tour a bit, played a few shows throughout the southeast, opened for a couple upcoming artists. We went our separate ways so we could go to school, but it was a fun experience. I still play guitar just about every day.
HCE: What has been your favorite memory in NSA?
BS: My best memory of NSA is from my first concert freshman year. President Wagner and his wife Debbie make it to every show, so it’s been a tradition to crack a few jokes about them during our skits. I was tasked with playing Wagner and I had to start our cold open with “Debbie, maybe after tonight the kids won’t be the only ones taking a midnight dip in the pool….” President Wagner came up to me afterwards with a stern look on his face, stared me straight in the eye, and said, “Son, I approve.”
HCE: Does NSA have any events coming up?
BS: Our Fall Concert is on Dec. 6th at 9PM in White Hall 208. You can also catch us at First Friday a few days before on the 4th at 5:30PM in the DUC Terraces.
