Blazers: Not Just For The Office

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Whenever we think business casual, our first instinct would be to pull our beloved perfectly-tailored black blazer out of our closets, and we’d be right. However, blazers can go a much longer way than just being an occasion-only staple. Blazers can not only classy up an otherwise overly casual outfit, but they can do the opposite as well. Worn right, your blazer can be your new outfit staple, even in the most casual situation.

Brown: Instead of gravitating towards a traditional black, try a light brown piece instead. It’s much less serious and intimidating than a sharp black blazer. They work great with light wash denim and are a great transition into the spring.

Patterns: Prints and patterns are everywhere these days, so it’s only fitting for them to don your blazer as well. Whether you want to go pretty in floral or fierce in animal, a blazer’s classic shape supports whatever crazy pattern you want to go with. To keep this look from being too overwhelming, try layering the blazer over a wider shirt and keep the rest of the ensemble relatively toned down.

Colored: While we’re on the subject of funky colors, try exactly that – colors! You’re not headed to a business meeting, so it’s okay to stand out. Bonus points if you match your blazer to your pants! Monochrome isn’t going anywhere, either.

Oversized: Another way to embrace this classic piece is to hop on the menswear bandwagon. An oversized blazer can make any outfit more casual, and it gives the perfect I-just-threw-this-together-and-yes-I’m-always-effortlessly-chic vibe. This is especially great with a pair of shorts, particularly when the hems match up!

Textured: If you’re not yet ready to trade your black out for something a little more eye-catching (to each their own!), you can always go for a more daring material. Everywhere you go you can find blazers in crazy materials and textures, ranging from sheer to leather. A leather blazer is also a great alternative to a leather bomber jacket, adding a little more polish to an outfit, yet keeping a casual vibe.

White: My personal favorite. Few things are more classy (and have gotten me more compliments) than a white blazer. White clothes in general have a crisp, pristine feeling to them, but a white blazer takes the cake. Just as versatile as black, they’re a worthy investment for the spring and will carry through to every season (winter whites, anyone?). Whether you’re going for an all-white ensemble or wearing it with a pair of distressed jeans, the blazer will make any outfit stand out.

To keep your blazer casual, try wearing it with distressed denim or boyfriend jeans, or even try it over a sweater. Blazers can also be used as a lightweight jacket in warmer seasons. And if all else fails, you can always go to your interviews in style!
