The Best Ways to Avoid Hangovers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Everyone’s been there: after a fun night, you wake up with that horrible feeling: you’ve been cursed with a hangover. You had such a fun night, but this awful feeling in the morning has you wondering if you’ll ever be able to go out again. Here are some tips to help avoid that horrible “morning after” feeling.

1. Drink water

A common symptom of hangovers is that dreaded, pounding headache — but there’s an easy fix to help you avoid this. Alcohol contributes to dehydration, which then leads to headaches. If you’re looking to ditch the headache, drink water throughout the night, before you go to bed, and in the morning.

2. Drink clear beverages

Drinks such as whiskey and tequila have higher amounts of congeners (a toxic bi-product of the alcohol production process). Alcohols with lower levels of congeners are less likely to cause hangovers, so it’s best to stick to vodka, gin, or rum.

3. Get enough sleep

Alcohol disrupts sleep patterns, but sleep helps your body recover. So, make sure you get enoug of it, and maybe set your alarm for a little later the next morning.

4. Know your limits

The best way to prevent hangovers is to drink in moderation. The severity of hangovers is linked to the number of drinks you consume. This means stopping before you are out of control is always a good choice.

Have fun kids, and make sure to stay safe!
