Summer is right around the corner – FINALLY! If you’re staying in Atlanta for classes or an internship, take your mind off work and experience the best of what a Georgia summer has to offer. With lots of beautiful sunny days, I suggest getting outside and appreciating the beauty of the peach state. Here are a couple of ways to kick start the season and enjoy the city.

1. Watch a drive-in movie

When the sun goes down, pull up your car for a double feature at the Starlight 6 Drive-In Theatre. Located off Moreland Avenue only about a thirty-minute drive from campus, this theatre is an Atlanta landmark, running for over 60 years now. Pack a picnic and relax in the old fashioned atmosphere while enjoying the latest movies.

2. Take a stroll through the Atlanta Botanical Garden

If you haven’t already been, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is a beautiful and peaceful place to spend your afternoon. In the summer, there are always special events going on. Their concert series is especially wonderful because you get to enjoy the garden in the evening, so it’s not as hot. In addition to a plethora of vibrant plants, the garden also hosts art exhibits throughout the premises, so make sure to check out their website and plan your trip to get the most of what the garden has to offer.

3. Shoot the hooch

Rent a tube or kayak and cool off while floating down the Chattahoochee river. This is perfect for a weekend afternoon when you want to escape the madness of the city and relax, taking in all the beauty of the Georgia landscape. The river is pretty gentle, so you don’t have to be experienced to grab a paddle and enjoy the river. On your trip, you might even spot some turtles, ducks, and stunning blue herons.

4. Hike Stone Mountain

If you haven’t been already in your time at Emory, you must check out Stone Mountain before you leave. Grab a couple friends or take some time to yourself to take a quick hike up to the top of the mountain and enjoy a view of the city that you can’t get anywhere else. The park surrounding the mountain also has tons of summer activities to offer. In addition to their famous lasershows, the park also hosts special events for the summer, like a grand fireworks show for the 4th of July.

I hope you’ll take a break from your work and studies to take advantage of some of the wonderful things Atlanta has to offer!
