Best and Worst Dressed: Oscars 2015

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

Last Sunday marked possibly the most anticipated date in the fashion world: The Oscars. Every year, we eagerly anticipate seeing which dress celebrities chose for the big walk down the red carpet. And this year we were definitely not disappointed. Here’s a roundup of my personal best and worst dressed stars at the 2015 Academy Awards.

Best:

Rosamund Pike: The red gowns on this year’s carpet were quite possibly my favorite and Rosamund Pike’s Givenchy embellished gown was no exception. Everything from the silhouette to the floral applique and the slit made it the perfect balance between glamorous and sexy.

Julianne Moore: This year’s winner for best actress stunned in a custom made Chanel gown. The gown featured over 80,000 hand embroidered sequins and flowers. Fitting for the queen of this year’s bash, no?

Felicity Jones: A lot of people disliked this dress but I thought that she looked spectacular. Her Alexander McQueen gown was a play on the princess style ball-gown with its modern neckline and beaded bust.

Reese Witherspoon: This nominee for best actress was the essence of old Hollywood glamour in her Tom Ford gown. The classic black and white look paired with her simple glamorous hair was timeless.

Dakota Johnson: Her Saint Laurent dress was another red gown that caught my eye. I love the simple silhouette, one shoulder look, and silver-knot detail on her shoulder. Her messy ponytail and cherry-red pout perfectly paired with the red gown.

Jennifer Anniston: Her beaded Atlier Versace gown was simply stunning. The nude color suited her perfectly and she let her sparkling gown shine by keeping her makeup, hair, and accessories extremely paired down.

Worst: I actually genuinely liked most of the gowns that I saw that night. There were definitely far fewer faux pas than in Oscar’s past. However, a few gowns definitely stood out to me…and not in a good way.

Gwyneth Paltrow: This pink Ralph and Russo creation would have been fine if it was not for the giant floral applique on her shoulder. She looks like she belongs at a prom in the 80’s.

Lady Gaga: Another awkward dress that could have been saved had it not been for those sleeves and red leather gloves. This one was by Azzedine Alaia.

Scarlett Johansson: The details on her Atlier Versace dress were just plain awkward. The neckline was unflattering and that beaded choker was way too much.

Solange Knowles: Beyonce’s little sister was swallowed by all of the fabric in her Christian Siriano creation. It was the only red dress I disliked on Sunday.
