Meet “Big Man on Campus” Cutie: Tommy Nguyen (’19)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

As the sole male member of the EC Dance Team and the only freshman B.M.O.C. nominee, Tommy Nguyen is already making a name for himself here at Emmanuel! He’s a little worried about the competition, being a newbie on campus, but after meeting with him, we know he’s going to bring his A-game this Thursday night. Listen in!

Hometown: Revere, MA

Major: Biology with a concentration in Physiology

Relationship Status: Single

Zodiac Sign: Aquarius

HCE: So, how do you feel about being nominated for Big Man on Campus?

TN: It struck me as a surprise because I’m a freshman, so I wouldn’t expect myself to be involved in something like this because I don’t really know anybody here. But I was nominated by the Dance Team and they said that I had a good shot at doing it. [They said] I had a couple years to do it since I’m a freshman, but I was just like, why not do it this year and see what it’s like?

HCE: That’s awesome! Seeing as you were nominated by them, what made you join the Dance Team? How long have you been dancing?

TN: I’ve been dancing for about 5 years now. I’m a hip hop dancer, and luckily the Dance Team was a hip hop group. [The Dance Team] kind of motivated me to come to EC. I had other choices for schools, but Emmanuel having a dance team made me say, yeah, this is my school.

HCE: Aww, how sweet! Is hip hop your favorite type of dance or do you dabble in other things too?

TN: Umm, there’s hip hop… a little bit of tango…

HCE: Ooh, fun! So, the Dance Team won the Grand Champion title at the New England Cheer & Dance Competition this past weekend. How was that for you?

TN: It was really exciting. Like I said, as a freshman, I wasn’t expecting something like this to happen. To win the Grand Championship and be Champion overall, it was a really exciting thing as a freshman and as a team. You just know that you made it.

HCE: That’s really incredible. Congratulations! As a freshman, what’s been your favorite thing about Emmanuel so far?

TN: My favorite things so far would be two things: [first of all], the friends that I’ve made. I feel like I’ve found my place here. And also the Dance Team.

HCE: Two great things! What do you want to do after college?

TN: I’m thinking about either going to med school or PA school to become a pediatrician.

HCE: Amazing. And finally, what is a motto that you live by?

TN: Probably “do onto others as you want them to do onto you” because it’s true. As long as you respect others, they’ll respect you.

Thanks so much for sitting down with us, Tommy! Best of luck in the competition this week– you’re going to kill it!
