Dear Mom,
Let me preface this with saying that our relationship hasn’t always been easy. Let’s not forget the battles over what I could wear or curfew drama. During middle school and parts of high school, I was convinced you were trying to ruin my life. Now I understand why wearing a skirt without tights in December is a bad idea and that staying up on Sunday until 1 am makes for a rough Monday morning.
Thank you for being a hard working woman that found a balance between work and home. I admire your ambition, and have always loved watching you teach and work with your students. Some of my favorite memories are of me organizing your desk while talking about our days at school. You’re a powerhouse fueled by knowledge and experience that I noticed at a young age and you continue to motivate me.
Thank you for keeping up with me. As the family’s “wild card”, I appreciate that you support me in all of my endeavors and allow me to make mistakes. I’m sure there are times when you wish I had a clear plan, but that’s not really my style, and you understand that.
Finally, thank you for all of the love that you show in different ways: the rides to school, movie nights, late night phone calls, and the occasional ten dollar bill that unexpectedly shows up in my wallet. Thank you for suggesting a trip to Dairy Queen when everything is wrong, the car sing alongs, and reminding me about dentist appointments. You’re the Lorelai to my Rory, my friend, my mentor, my inspiration, my mother. There is no way that I can tangibly repay you, because what you’ve given me is priceless.
Love,
Eimile, your favorite (and only) daughter
