Follow Her: Zürich, Switzerland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

My goal for study abroad consisted of one thing; to explore as many places as possible. Since I made it my mission to travel, I was lucky enough to visit nine countries! One of the enchanting countries I visited was Switzerland. A few friends and I knew Zürich as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It didn’t hurt that the Swiss food combines French, German and Italian cuisine.  As soon as we booked our flights, we knew we were in for the trip of a lifetime.

My first day in Zürich began deliciously. I think Conditorei Schober may have made one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. I always like to ask my server what the most popular item on the menu is. She recommended this parfait and it did not disappoint. Delicious, light yogurt mixed with sliced berries and granola is how I’d like to start my mornings everyday! The dining rooms were decorated with paintings up and down the walls, decorated with woven wooden chairs. This place is a must-go if you’re looking for any meal in Zürich.

We spent a lot of the day roaming Zürich. I love exploring cities. Some of my favorite memories of traveling are walking about just admiring the architecture of old buildings. We don’t have buildings as old at home in the US, so being able to explore cities which have been around for hundreds of years amazes me. There are huge mountains surrounding the city. Everywhere you turn in Zürich there’s another beautiful view. It’s unlike anything I’m used to.

Cheese Fondue

Chocolate Truffles

Beef and Pesto Ravioli

I know I’ve already mentioned it, but the food in Switzerland was amazing. I ate nothing mediocre. Each bite made me want to savor the entire meal because I knew I wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon. Switzerland is known for their cheese fondue, so I had to try it out. The cheese was rich and thick. You can dip veggies and bread into the fondue for the perfect midday snack, or after dinner dessert. The chocolate truffles melted in your month within a moment of hitting your tongue. My friends and I had to go back on our last day in Zürich. We couldn’t leave without trying everything. Their ravioli still makes my mouth water when I think of it. Our dinners were filled with talk about what food to try next and where we must go before our trip ended.

At the end of our time in Zürich, we took a day trip to Schaffhausen, Switzerland to get a feel for a smaller town. It was like stepping back in time. The buildings were painted an array of pastel colors and all the cafes had seating outside for customers to take in the beauty of the town square. We took a walk down the river and were able to see the old houses and farms which have been a part of this town. I’ll never forget the beauty of a city just standing still in time.

Until next time, Switzerland!
