Does Color Really Impact Mood?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

Color is something that is a part of everyone’s everyday life. They impact your life more than you realize, and there are actual reasons behind why certain things are certain colors. So, before you go redecorating and painting your new bedroom, take a listen to what each of the colors mean.

Blue: The color blue is a favored color by many people, and this is by no means a coincidence. It is the color that is most used to calm someone down or bring serenity. It’s the color of so many things in nature that bring peace and pure calm energy such as the ocean, the sky, and even someone you love’s eyes.

Green: Green can mean two very different things. It can be related to jealousy (AKA the green-eyed monster) or it can mean tranquility and good luck (four-leaf clovers). If you’re surrounded by nature then it will bring out the tranquility and calming aspect of the color; however, if someone out there is doing just about everything to get on your nerves, then the color green may just flash in the back of your head.

Red: Red can mean one of many things; it can mean love, lust, anger, or even passion. Think about all the different things that red is related to. There’s red roses, red lipstick, or a red fiery ember. This specific color brings out heightened emotions. If your bedroom is painted red, then good luck– it could be difficult to sleep in the room because of the heightened emotions that you may feel when surrounded by the color. Next time you want to impress your boyfriend or girlfriend, keep the color red in mind, whether it be red decorations or a nice red dress.

Yellow: The happiness color. The color that brightens everyone’s day and makes them feel alive and alert. Yellow is the color that is related to being energetic, comfortable, and joyful. It is also the most attention-grabbing color; think about it, if you’re in a field with a bunch of lilacs and one sunflower, you will pick out the sunflower right away. It brings about warmth due to what we most relate it to: the sun. Due to this, it brings about the wild side in people and makes them more apt to try new things.

Orange: Orange is either your favorite color or your least favorite color. The color orange is a mix of yellow and red; therefore, it is the color that resembles a mix of both sides of the colors such as warmth and energy. It’s a color that is eye-catching and can stimulate the mind when it’s seen and examined for long periods of time.

White: The color white is based on purity. It’s the fresh start, the new beginning, the most innocent color. This is why the bride wears white at her wedding, and a baby is dressed in white at their baptism. It’s the color that brings about the purest parts in us and makes us feel rejuvenated.

Pink: Pink is associated with romance, tenderness, and compassion. Pink is a mix of white and red, so it’s a more pure version of red. It’s the romance and love minus the lust. It’s also known as a more feminine color, and therefore follows the stereotype of being gentle and compassionate.

Purple: Purple is the color that is most known for royalty and wisdom, with a sprinkle of mystery. If your room is painted purple, then it could make you feel more confident when you’re getting ready for the day, since you are surrounded by the color of royalty. However, be careful because the color purple is known to lead to having nightmares.

Black: Black is the color that absorbs all light. It’s the color of superstition (black cats) or the color of evil and nighttime. It’s the color that brings about the bad memories and lets us blend into the background and darkness. At funerals, we’re told to wear black because it’s the appropriate color to grieve in due to its absence of vibrancy.

Brown: Brown is the color of grounding. It brings out the best in people and encourages them to feel more resilient. It brings people comfort and positive energy when they need it most. It’s the color that resembles strength and will bring someone to nature.

Now go on and paint that room, go do some retail therapy, and keep in mind the colors of everything. It can make all the difference in the world.
