How to Become a Morning Person

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

We like the idea of waking up early, getting all of our tasks done early, and calling ourselves morning people. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. When we want to seize the day and wake up early, our first thought is to go to bed early. But in the morning, it’s just too easy to hit the snooze button! It takes a certain type of person to be a “morning person,” but here are some tricks to follow to become that person.

Turn off all electronics

Even if you get into bed early, chances are you spend hours laying in the dark watching Netflix or playing on your phone. It’s common to stare at a screen until we end up falling asleep. The lights from laptop and phone screens disrupt your sleep cycle more than natural light, so the first thing you can do to become a morning person is shut off all electronics an hour before going to sleep. This will make it easier and less distracting once you decide to fall asleep, and you will be thanking yourself in the morning.

Download a sleep app

Technology these days, am I right? There are apps for everything, including sleep. Sleep apps make sure you get out of bed early and in a great way. For example, there’s an app called Wake N Shake that requires you to shake your phone in order for the alarm to go off. Another app is Better Me, which automatically posts a status update on your Facebook if you don’t wake up on time. Downloading one of these apps will not only make waking up a tad bit easier, but will also make your mornings a little more fun.

Eat a healthy breakfast

Everyone has heard that eating a healthy breakfast starts the day off right. Forcing yourself to get out of bed in the morning is one thing, but getting out of bed doesn’t necessarily mean you have energy. The first thing you should do in the morning is make yourself a healthy breakfast, which will give you energy for hours. Try some oatmeal, yogurt or eggs. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so treat it that way.

Waking up is difficult – no one understands this more than college students. By treating your body right and making healthy choices throughout the day, waking up earlier and becoming a morning person will come naturally to you. Just be motivated and your body and mind will thank you later!
