Emerson has always been a chapter that liked to take risks, so emailing the chapter network to spotlight different Her Campus chapters at other schools was no different. One of the schools that we have decided we wanted to introduce to you is the chapter at ASU! The chapter relaunched in January 2018 after being on hiatus the previous few years. Located in the downtown campus of Arizona State University, HC ASU is a chapter whose mission is “creating content by women, for women.” The team strives to provide enjoyable, relatable articles for their fellow students.

Six talented executive board members lead the ASU chapter. Daria Yazmiene runs HC ASU as Campus Correspondent, and she is a junior journalism and mass communication student. The events director is Madison Andrade, a political science major in her senior year. Senior Ashley Oakes is the senior editor, and she also studies journalism and mass communication. Kelly Donohue is another journalism and mass communication student, and she is a sophomore fulfilling the role of operations manager. Lusenda McCallum is the social media director, and she is a junior anthropology major. Last but not least, sophomore Angel Jimenez is a journalism and mass communication student who is the marketing and publicity director.

HC ASU has been working on producing more content this semester, and they have plenty of great features and profiles to show for it. On the profile side, “Luke Alexander: The Youtuber You Should Already be Subscribed To” by Daria Yazmiene is a top pick. The article is a fun interview with Alexander that gives a lot of insight into the job of being a YouTuber. One of the chapter’s favorite features is “To Everyone Who Needs to Hear This: You’re Not Bad in Bed,” an article that takes a closer look into sexuality and the rigid expectations society holds us to. Another highlight article is “Be Who That Little Girl Wanted You to Be” by Madison Andrade,  a motivational piece that inspires women to work hard and follow their dreams. “Sex After Sexual Assault” is another important article the chapter wanted to mention. The way this author candidly talks about their experiences and coming to terms with trauma is so powerful, and using the HC ASU platform to speak up about this topic will be a helpful resource for many readers.

HC ASU is working on their chapter presence more than ever and is hoping to continue reaching new people. This year, they’ve tabled at their campus block party, held team bonding events, and had a team photoshoot. The chapter is excited to spend the rest of the semester bonding and becoming more than just a staff team. Already, one of their favorite team memories was during a meeting this year for a sex-themed content week, where they all learned more about each other and shared their experiences together.

HC ASU is more than just a Her Campus chapter. They emphasize that when you join, you’ll find more than just a team of writers. The chapter is focused on building lasting relationships with each other and making sure everyone feels welcome. To describe themselves, they’d use the words “fun, open, and sisterhood.” The ASU team wants everyone to have an enjoyable time in the chapter and feel comfortable with each other, and they “want everyone to feel like they have a safe place to come to.” Overall, HC ASU is a chapter that wants to create a safe, fun environment for all members and bring that positive energy to students everywhere.
