5 Useful Things To Do This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

Exams are over (for now). Summer is here in all her glory. The perfect time to kick back, relax and not worry about school at all right?

Although there is nothing wrong with that, the summer is also the perfect time to continue your education in a more or less “informal” ways. Here I’ll discuss five ways you can make the most of your summer and still learn a whole lot at the same time!

1.) Internships. There are so many opportunities out there for a college student to take. So many companies and people to shadow. Especially if you’re are going into a field of study which you want to know more about, an internship in that area will give you great experience and exposure to that work. Not mention it’s a great resume booster.

2.) Jobs. Lets hear it for summer jobs. They’re great for easy money but at the cost of spending sunny days working for it. However summer jobs aren’t just for earning a little extra money for the college year, they can offer invaluable experience about the real world.

3.) Summer classes.  I know, I know. What a drab. Maybe it’ll make you feel like doing this. Just the thing to kill your summer buzz right? Maybe not. Taking summer classes can help you get ahead in your course schedules and maybe even help you graduate early. You’ll could even make more room in your course schedule to take more classes that interest you. Summer classes don’t necessarily have to be directly school related either. Consider taking a photography, painting, theatre, cooking or any other class that interests you at either an accredited college or community center. Certified registered nurse (CNA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification courses can be taken over the summer at a community college or university that offers it. Welcome back to learning :)

4.) Volunteering. Community service offers chances for an individual to grow and look at life in different perspectives. Taking the opportunity to help out in your community can help you find your true passion in service. Maybe you’ll find your calling to continue to do that special work throughout your life too.

5.) Read! Fiction, Non-fiction, Sci-fi, Romance, Comedy, literally any genre will do. Reading opens up new doors in the mind. Literature gives us glimpses into another life and broadens our own life with introspection. Curl up with a book this summer and let the mind wander! Not only is this good for mental health, reading helps with many other aspects of life. One of which includes having an open mind to all prospects of the universe.

Have a beautiful summer Lovelies! Whatever you end up doing, remember to have fun with your well deserved break :)
