Your Boobs Should Be Your Breast Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Durham chapter.

I am a 19 years old girl and I believe my boobs can change my life.

And no I don’t want to be the next Kim Kardashian or Katie Price.

Modern women and girls know that it matters more what you have upstairs than what’s on your chest. Yet more young women need to realise that, however big or small they may be, it’s important to know your own knockers and this is what CoppaFeel is promoting.

Knowing your boobs could save your life

CoppaFeel is a Breast Cancer Awareness Charity that spread the simple truth that ‘knowing your boobs could save your life’`. The Durham Uni Boob Team has been restarted this year to spread this message around campus.

So if you have seen people walking around in Boob costumes, please do not assume, like some poor ignorant soul did that they are ‘Boobsoc’. Nor are they the feminist society.

So why are our baps so important?

1 in 8 women will experience breast cancer in their lives. There is a common misconception that young women can’t get cancer, but it’s not just one for the oldies. Everyone is at risk and even if you are less likely at a young age, it is still important to get into a habit of checking yourself.

And if you feel there is something wrong, don’t be afraid to see your doctor.

Recognising cancer early on means a small operation, catching it too late can mean losing your life.

How do I check my puppies?

What are the tell-tale signs?

Look and feel for:

·       Skin changes, e.g. puckering.

·       Nipple discharge

·       Nipple inversion and changes in direction

·       Rash or crusting around the nipple

·       Swelling under the arm or collar bone

·       Pain under the armpits

·       Lumps

There is no precise way to check yourself, I think the general consensus is ‘just have a good feel’.

Get someone to help you if you like.

That said make sure you are aware of the symptoms and what you are checking for, don’t leave it solely to your boyfriend, girlfriend, or whoever. It’s your judgement that counts.

CoppaFeel are bouncing around campus this month!

CoppaFeel’s Boob Week One started on the 19th of October and you will find the charity reps outside the Bill Bryson selling food and playing games such as Bra Pong and Pin the Nipple on the Boob.

Get ready for 30th October, CoppaFeel Day, when the team will be going into lectures to remind people to check themselves as well. The charity soon hopes to set up an interactive Twitter and promote even more events.

“As the year goes on, we simply aim to get checking yourself to be common among Durham students, even if it requires walking everywhere in a boob costume…” Anna Ball

And if you think you might forget to check every month, then sign up to CoppaFeel’s text service (text UBT DURHAM to 70500) that sends the recipient a monthly text reminding them to check their boobs, and it’s entirely FREE! No subscriptions, just a text reminding you to look after yourself.

CoppaFeel’s message? So whatever you like to call them: boobs, buns, nungas, knockers, baps, puppies, Fred and George… make sure you get your eyes down below your face and check yourself! It might just save your life.
