When I talk to people and tell them that I’m an English major, often the first thing they say to me is something along these lines: “Oh wow, that’s cool. I used to love to read but I really don’t have time anymore.” This has never been a problem for me, as a deep love for books has been a defining trait of my personality. However, this sentiment of not having enough time has always given me pause, because I’ve always felt that people will want to read given a good enough book.
Additionally, when I started at DU as a first-year student two years ago, I pragmatically traveled around the Gates Field House at the Fall Club Fair, looking for a book club that catered to all students, not just those in Honors. There was no such thing. Upon this disappointment, coupled with the fact that I had several friends who have expressed that they wished they read more, a friend and I decided to co-found a Book Club.
If you’re interested in joining, here’s a quick gist:
- We read one book a quarter, and we vote on which book we read on.
- We meet three times a quarter to discuss, and do one social event a quarter just to hang out and have fun!
- Book club is super, super chill. If you don’t have time to come or to read, it’s not a big deal!
- We really just hang out, drink some tea, eat some snacks, and talk about the books we read. No extra work or effort required.
