Is Valentine’s Day A Marketing Scheme?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DESU chapter.

There are many opinions on whether Valentine’s Day is a marketing scheme or just another holiday. As the holiday starts to arrive, stores begin setting up about a month or two early.  Showing their assortment of cards, gifts, candy, and decorations. Jewelry stores set up their special holiday collections, restaurants sometimes prepare a special menu or provide a deal, hotels raising their prices for one day, and some entertainment places provide discounts or special days with cheaper prices. According to CNN in 2018, “75% was spent on chocolate and candy sales, 144 million cards were purchased and exchanged, 15% bought gift cards, and 4.7 million was spent on jewelry.”  Although the question is if Valentine’s Day is a marketing scheme or could it be an excuse for people to celebrate something?  Many people celebrate this holiday, whether they are single or in a relationship.  Some women dress up and go to a club or have a “Galentine’s,” while couples plan a night of romance.  Others like to stay home, have a night to themselves, and drink some wine while binge watching.  Some believe Valentine’s Day is a real holiday and the one day in the year to just go spend money to show how much you love someone.  Whether it is your parents, significant other, pet, friend, or other.  Others believe it is a waste of a holiday and people can express their love every day.  Ultimately the opinion is up to you, do you think Valentine’s Day is another holiday where you celebrate it and spend the money or ignore it as if it’s another typical day?
