This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DePauw chapter.

This week’s profile is sophomore Amelia Black, a communications major and a Japanese minor. Because of her passion for the Japanese culture, she founded and is currently the vice president of the Japanese club. Amelia is also a global partner and works at two restaurants in Indianapolis. Amelia went on an awesome winter term and has amazing plans for the upcoming year! Let’s hear about it!

Her Campus: Hey Amelia! Thank you for taking time to talk with us. What did you do this past winter term?

AB: This past winter term, I traveled with 24 other students in the Japanese language department and computer science department. We did a homestay in Gunma, Japan and stayed there for several days before moving to Tokyo. In Tokyo, we explored robotics and new technology. We went to museums that displayed the newest technology. We also had free time in the evening. With that time, I often went to karaoke with my friends or to an Izakaya, which is an informal Japanese gastropub.

HC: That sounds like you guys had a blast! What was your favorite part about visiting Japan?

AB: My favorite part of Tokyo was being able to meet up with my DePauw friends who are native to Japan. Having to navigate through the city and the train system was also an awesome experience!

HC: Cool! Do you want to tell us about your big plans for next year?

AB: Next year, I will be studying at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan for the entire academic year. I am hoping to have my own apartment in downtown Tokyo. I will be studying international trade policy, deepening my understanding of Japanese linguistics and enhancing my pronunciation.

HC: What inspired you to study abroad in Japan for an entire year?

AB: I choose my program because it’s unique. With my program, I am able to do a month long internship in February with a Japanese company. I hope to accustom myself to Japanese business etiquette and behavior while sharpening my language skills.

HC: Sounds like an awesome plan! We are so excited for you! Thanks again Amelia!
