Skincare routines are almost as common as makeup tutorials on YouTube nowadays. This means people are now able to get skin care advice from board certified dermatologists without having to leave their house.

Here are some of their top tips for healthy skin!

Irish dermatologist, Sam Bunting, has her own skincare line called Dr. Sam’s Skincare as well as having 95K subscribers on YouTube. She creates a range of videos including Q&As, tips for all skin types, explainer videos and skin care top tips videos.

Some of her generic advice is that everyone should cleanse their skin at night. You can just wash your face in the morning but cleansing at night is crucial to having healthy skin. She recommends you leave all your blemishes alone and instead of popping them put products containing Benzoyl Peroxide on them at the first sign of a bump.

Another slightly unusual tip Dr. Bunting gives is to always sleep on your back. She says that sleeping on your side or your stomach for long periods of time can give you “smush lines” that are very hard to get rid of. Lastly, she recommends you consume good fats like oily fish, walnuts and avocados to help combat dry skin.

A very popular dermatologist on YouTube is Dr. Sandra Lee A.K.A. Dr. Pimple Popper. She has 6.1m subscribers and has her own TV show on TLC. While known for pimple popping and cyst removal videos, Dr. Lee also uploads videos with skin care tips and features in other channel’s videos where she shows her own skin care routine.

Dr. Lee highly recommends that whatever you are using on your face that you dab instead of rubbing. Whether it’s cotton pads or wipes, you should avoid vigorous rubbing as it causes wrinkles.

She recommends that you moisturise your face when it’s still moist and after your moisturiser has been sitting for a while you apply a retinoid to minimise fine lines and wrinkles.

Like Dr. Bunting, she uses Benzoyl peroxide on her spots and despite the popularity of her pimple popping videos she recommends you don’t pick at them at home.

Another popular dermatologist is Dr. Dray who has 608K subscribers on YouTube. She has a no-nonsense approach in her videos and gives all the science behind the products she uses and why you should use them.

In the last few weeks, Dr. Dray has been in some hot water over a video she made defending Deva Curl, a hair brand whose products have been causing people to experience hair loss. A lot of commenters believe she ignored big problems with the brand in the video and for someone who is usually well-informed she didn’t do enough research before making the video.

Despite this, a lot of viewers still turn to her for skin care advice. Dr. Dray’s main tip is to wear sun cream, lots and lots of sun cream. She encourages people to put two layers on and to spread it all the way down your neck and out to your ears as it is imperative for having youthful looking skin.

She says it doesn’t matter if you typically burn or not, sun cream should be part of your daily routine. Another easy tip she gives is before doing any sort of skin care you should thoroughly wash your hands as there is no point cleaning your face if you’re going to do it with dirty hands.

Dermatologists on YouTube aren’t all women. Dr. Davin Lim has 408K subscribers and posts weekly videos. His has a wide range of videos. He posts about how your diet affects your acne, product reviews, skin guides, Q&As, anti-ageing tips and procedures and much more.

Much like all the other dermatologists, Dr. Lim suggests you should be applying sun cream twice a day from as young as you can and suggests parents should start doing this with their children now.

Dermatologists are a relatively new but very welcome addition to YouTube. It’s very clear that if they can teach us anything, we need to not pick at our spots, and we need to be wearing a lot more sun cream.
