How Women Can Get Involved in Movember

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at DCU chapter.

You may have often seen the men in your life try to grow out their facial hair to support the Movember campaign. You may look at them and have to ask them, ‘What is this Movember thing you’re doing? What’s it about?’

To put it simply, Movember is a charity fighting to stop men from dying prematurely. According to Movember Ireland, men usually die six years before women. This charity aims by 2030 to reduce the number of men dying by 25%. Their main focus is on men’s mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. So, if you want to support a wonderful charity this month, here’s how us girls can get involved in raising money for them!

Set up a Team

The best thing you can do when taking part in Movember would be to start a team. This way no one feels like they’re taking part in the challenge alone and it makes it even easier to keep yourself accountable and motivate your friends!

Move for Movember

The way I’m choosing to support Movember this is year is through walking. I’ve made a pledge to walk roughly 60km this month in honour of the many men that die six years before they really should. You track your movement through an app called Strava and upload each walk after you’ve completed it. This is a great way to raise money and get yourself moving!

Host a Virtual Mo-ment

Hosting virtual Mo-ments is also another way to get yourself involved with the campaign. If you’re not up for the idea of walking, you can host a virtual event with your friends to raise funds! Try hosting a trivia night and charge for entry or even host a gaming night! There is an incredible amount of variety available with hosting a Mo-ment, so give it a go by all means!

Mo Your Own Way

This is by far the most versatile aspect of raising funds for Movember! Maybe set your team up with a cycling challenge, set a target for the week and stick to it. You could also set your team a gruelling workout challenge, like trying to reach five hundred squats by the end of the week. If you’re really feeling enthusiastic, you could try giving up sugar, coffee or kick a bad habit for the month of November! Anything goes!

Choosing a way to raise money for Movember may be tricky and sticking with certain challenges may be hard, but it’s so important to remember the reason why you’re doing it. By taking part in Movember and raising money for the charity, you will be helping to prevent the premature deaths of many males all over the world.

If you’re interested in signing up, pop on over to the Movember website. It only takes a few minutes to set up and to rope a friend or two into joining you too.
