By now you’ve probably heard of contouring, that chiseled and defined look made popular by none other than Kim Kardashian. Strobing, on the other hand, is contouring’s softer, more elegant cousin. This simple technique gives you that beautiful, Aphrodite-lady-seashell-bikini effect when you don’t have enough time (or motivation) to cut those cheekbones for the gods.

Let’s get into it. First, we’re going to look at the basic step-by-step process of strobing.

1. True glow begins from within–so make sure to take proper care of your skin! Here’s a basic guide to skincare to get you started. To augment your routine and give your skin a fresh, dewy glow, opt for a sheet mask. Originally a trend from South Korea, these masks have become quite popular in the U.S. and can be found anywhere from Sephora to CVS. Wear for 15-20 minutes and marvel at how soft your skin looks and feels!

2. A primer formulated to create a blurring, soft focus effect is perfect to create a base for strobing. I’ve shown one by Becca Cosmetics, but E.L.F also makes a fantastic, more affordable version

3. After priming your face and adding foundation (if you wish), a concealer slightly lighter than your skin tone should be placed on key areas of your face as sort of a blueprint for what comes later. Pen type concealers like those made by Maybelline and YSL work wonders for this. This chart highlights (haha) those key spots.

4. Applying a matte highlight shade will set your concealer and create a nice understated glow. It’s entirely possible to stop here, but we’re in for that next level glow. Are you prepared?

5. Shimmer. Irridescence. Anything less than full on glitter will work. Place your choice of highlight over those areas and be amazed at how gorgeous you look. I recommend anything from Becca or Anastasia Beverly Hills.

But wait, there’s more.

Don’t stop with the “normal” colors–all your champagnes, gold, and peaches–get creative with your glow! An artist on Etsy has created this wonderfully weird rainbow highlighter. See for yourself.

And the aforementioned Anastasia Beverly Hills has created their one and only MOONCHILD glow kit. Simply heavenly.

Now that you’ve been properly introduced to the concept of strobing, glow on out there and show off your inner goddess!
