The 10 Best Pieces of Media I Consumed in October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

Here is my list:

“A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings”

This is a short story by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez written in 1968 detailing the human response to those who are weak and dependent. This story uses a lot of imagery and allows the reader to examine the idea of binary opposites in literature. It’s an incredibly moving story about an “angel” who has washed up on the shores of a foreign land. I encourage everyone to give it a read!

Literally all of Laufey’s music

More specifically, the songs:

“Let You Break My Heart Again”

“Everything I Know About Love”

“Questions For The Universe”

“Best Friend”

The “Central Park” playlist on Spotify

This playlist was created by someone named Grace Galster, and the description is “Cold weather, 5th avenue, hot coffee, twinkle lights, saxophone playing in the distance, pure bliss.” This playlist makes me think of dancing with your best friends, traveling and romcoms. It’s full of old standards and a ton of jazz, and I listen to it every day on my way to school. It’s really been setting the fall mood for me.

Pat Mora’s Poetry

I’ve been reading a lot of Mora for my poetry class this quarter, and she’s the poet I’ve enjoyed the most so far. I especially have enjoyed “Elena,” “Mothers and Daughters” and “Two Worlds.” Mora is an American poet who writes about diversity within the Mexican-American experience.

“When Harry Met Sally”

For those who know me, this is a given. This is my favorite movie in the whole world, and if you haven’t seen it, you are really missing out. This movie has a classic “enemies to friends to enemies to lovers” trope going on and is full of unrequited love, killer outfits and the best movie score in the world.

Bridal Tiktok

For some reason, I am all over wedding TikTok and it’s absolutely giving me life. My “for you page” is full of people trying on wedding dresses, talking about color schemes and posting reactions of them walking down the aisle. I’m not planning on getting married any time soon, but this recurring theme has got me all the way in my feels.

Becky Birtha’s “JohnnieRuth”

This is another short story about a young girl, JohnnieRuth, who undergoes the process of self-discovery during adolescence that reaches a climax of joy and heightened awareness. It’s absolutely amazing writing.

“Ikigai”

Ikigai is a book that I’ve been meaning to read for a long time but only picked up recently. It’s about the Japanese secret to a long and happy life. My favorite chapter in the book is detailing responses from the longest-living people in the world and how they’ve gotten to where they are.

“Vintage Fantasy Magazine” on Instagram

This Instagram page is full of beautiful art and tailors to people who are into astrology. They post nearly every day. Give them a follow!

“Pride and Prejudice”

This one is a given as well. I’m only including it in this month’s media list because I watch it so often. I love period pieces so much because of the outfits and dialogue. Austen’s works are my favorite classics, and in my opinion, the movies are just as good as her literature.

Thanks for tuning in! I hope you give some of these a chance!
