My Love/Hate Relationship with Change

People say that the one thing you can count on in life, is that it won’t ever stop changing.

From the age of 7 I can remember having painfully anxious feelings about things changing. I have been known to shed a few tears upon finding out I had to switch teachers going from 1st to 2nd grade (true story) but there were also times I would react out of impulse, jumping in my car as a 16-year-old and driving 3 hours to watch a football game on a whim. There are times when I plan everything out, from my clothes to my meals, and there are times when I simply go with what feels right. For me, it is safe to say I have a love/hate relationship with change.

I know change has always been good for me and it is never as bad as I imagine it to be, but sometimes it is still hard to jump out of my comfort zone. When I do, I almost always find something new I didn’t know I loved. So the million dollar question then is this: Why is change so hard?

Change is hard because it is unknown, it is risky and it is lonely. Though changes can be big, like moving cross country by yourself to follow a career or an S.O., changes can also be as small as ordering an iced Latte instead of a hot one. The idea behind our hesitance to do something we’ve never done before comes from the same place, no matter how big or small. It comes from the voice that says,  “But what if I don’t like it?” or “What if everyone else thinks I’m crazy?”

And the answer is this: You might not like it and people might think you’re crazy. But that is the best part. A person truly does not know how far they can go unless they test their limits and making changes is the perfect way to do that. Trying something new is the best way to learn who you are, although it may scare you to death.

So do something you never thought you could, fail, and then do something else. Change is the most beautiful thing we humans have control over, and we are in control of what our life looks like. Take advantage of this time, and don’t be afraid to change it up.
