Reflecting on my New Year’s Resolutions One Month Into 2023

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

I’ve never really been one to make New Year’s Resolutions. To be honest, I didn’t like the idea of change, even if it was for the better. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to accept change and view it more as growth rather than becoming someone I can’t recognize. So at the end of last year, I wanted to make a list of resolutions that I seriously want to work on. Now that we are about one month into 2023, I wanted to reflect on my list.

1. Working Out

I know this is probably on everybody’s New Year’s Resolutions list. And I’ve always told myself that I was going to get back in the gym once the new year started, but I had never stuck to it. But this year, my motivation was different. In the past, I had just wanted to work out to lose weight. While that is a totally valid reason to go to the gym, I realized this year I wanted to go to the gym more for mental health reasons. I’ve found myself just sitting in bed, wasting the day on my phone, so I wanted to find new ways to get out of the house and stay busy. I have started to take spin classes, which, although they are very intense, are also very fun. I’ve found it’s a good way to clear my head and take a break from schoolwork while also feeling productive. So, for this first resolution, I think I have made good on this and will try to continue this as the year progresses.

2. Spending Less Time on my Phone

In this day and age, it feels impossible not to have a phone on yourself 24/7. And it is practically impossible. For this resolution, I wanted to not take my phone every single place I went. For example, if I was going to the store with my friends for an hour, I wanted to leave my phone at home. I know that sometimes a phone is necessary, but I wanted to rely on it less. And honestly, I haven’t really worked on this resolution. I hope that just by writing this out right now, I will be reminded to not always check my phone and take it with me everywhere.

3. Saving Money

Again, this one might be a pretty common resolution, but the me from last year was actually out of control when it came to spending. I have a few trips planned for 2023, so I really wanted to save up money for them instead of buying little things more often. And for this one, I have tried really hard. When I see little things I want in the store, I really try to stop and think about how much I want them. If there is no real use for it, or I don’t want it that much, I will pass on it. I still spend a lot of money on food, but that can be next year’s resolution.

4. Trying to be More Decisive

If you know me in person, you know that I am probably the world’s most indecisive person. And I’m not exaggerating on that one. If someone asks me where I want to eat for dinner, I literally do not have an answer for them. But after friends and family got mad at this trait of mine, I really wanted to work on this. This one isn’t that easy for me, but I’m trying to make trivial decisions into easy things. But with every little decision that gets thrown at me recently, I’m still thinking I need to work on this one more.

5. Be a Better Her Campus Member

Last but certainly not least, I would like to write more. I will admit I got away from writing for a little bit in the past, but it is seriously something I enjoy. So I would like to use this platform as a creative outlet and to share my writing! So just by writing this article, I would say I am making pretty good on this resolution. And I have plenty more ideas in store for this semester, so keep an eye out for more articles from me!

Overall, it takes work to complete New Year’s resolutions. And some resolutions are harder than others. But I am determined to put in the work this year and truly grow as a person. Now that we are one month into 2023, I can see how far I’ve come and what I need to keep working on!
