In high school I was very involved and going into my first year of college I was nervous I wouldn’t make any friends, especially since I live off campus as a freshman. It made it even more difficult to feel that I am a part of my campus. I desperately needed to feel as if I was a part of something bigger, and my sorority did that and more for me.

I didn’t go through formal recruitment, I never even thought that I would ever join a sorority, but I was walking around my campus and I came across a table for Phi Mu and the women at the table were so welcoming and they asked me if I was interested and I decided that this was the way that I could meet people and start to become more involved on campus, and it was the best decision I ever made.

Yes, at first I was scared to walk into the first recruitment event, I cried,  because I hadn’t been around so many girls in my life and I was so scared that I wouldn’t fit in, because of the way media portrays sororities in a negative light, but I pushed myself to go and talk to the women of Phi Mu and because of them, I instantly felt welcomed and that I belonged there.

Through joining my sorority I have met my best friends and some of my future bridesmaids and I couldn’t be more excited to finally have a group of women in my life. Being involved in this group of women helped me see myself in a different light, I have become more confident in who I am and the woman I am becoming. I am no longer afraid to put myself out into the world. This group of women is also one of my biggest support systems and they inspire me every day to be the best version of myself. Your sisters will always be there for you no matter what trouble you are in. I was going through a lot of hardships during my first year and all my sisters made me feel loved and supported no matter what I was going through.

Not only has joining a sorority brought me some of my best friends, but it has also given me so many opportunities. One of the best things about sororities is their philanthropy. Phi Mu’s philanthropy is something that is super close to my heart and is super close to everyone else’s and you can tell through the motivation to support the Colorado Children’s Hospital.

This philanthropy has given me the opportunity to make a difference in my community and to be involved with something I am so passionate about and I’m forever grateful for that. There are also leadership opportunities that are offered through joining a sorority. During recruitment, I was a part of the membership community and it helped me feel like I was a part of something bigger and being able to tell new members about my story and see their interest in Phi Mu was something that I will always carry with me. Taking time out of my day to educate the students of my campus on Phi Mu and our passion for our philanthropy is something I will always be willing to do.

Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I have made for myself. Every week there is something exciting to do and I always have a date dash or a philanthropy event to look forward to. I am forever grateful for this experience and I reach out to any girl struggling to make friends you feel you fit in with or maybe you just want a strong girl gang to back you up. Even if you think joining a sorority might not be for you, I say try it out, you never know what could happen.
