A Guide to Balancing School With All Other Aspects of Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CU Boulder chapter.

As a college student, it can be extremely overwhelming trying to balance school with work, friends, family, and most importantly, yourself. Here is a quick and simple guide to balancing all of those aspects.

Put Yourself First

Your mental and physical health is just as, if not more, important than anything else that may be going on in your life. If you feel overwhelmed and are stressed out, it’s probably because you are! So just take a little bit of time each day to focus on yourself. Whether that be getting coffee or food, watching Netflix, doing a face mask, painting your nails, or going to the gym, do it! A clear and healthy mind will help you to be more efficient in the other tasks that need to be completed.

Prioritize

If something needs immediate attention, do that thing first. Getting the more important and pressing things done first will ease stress and allow for more time for other things, like your social life or other homework assignments.

Don’t Procrastinate on Long Term Assignments

If you know you have something due in a week, two weeks, or even a month, try to get it done as soon as possible. Not only will you have enough time to complete it, but when you’re done with it, there is more time for other things. This can be very helpful if you have a job; you can get the assignment out of the way if you know you have a busy week at work coming up.

Set Boundaries

Maybe you get distracted easily and need to get an assignment done, but you just can’t bring yourself to do it. We’ve all been there. An example of a boundary you can set to conquer this issue is: “I am not going to go out until I can get this assignment done,” “I need to get this math problem done before I go to dinner,” etc.

Make To-Do Lists

Personally, I have found this to be very helpful. It is challenging remembering everything that needs to be done every single day, so writing down tasks and checking them off as they are completed is helpful, and, not to mention, satisfying.

I hope this guide to balancing your life was helpful. I know we all struggle with this at one point or another. Have a great week, everybody!
