6 Stereotypes That Are Completely Wrong About Sororities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CSU chapter.

1. All sorority girls do is party.

Many girls in my chapter and other chapters do like to go out on the weekends, however we do a lot of different things. We have a lot of very fun sober events that we do like sisterhoods or socials. Sisterhoods are within our chapter and are non-required events where we do fun things together like karaoke or painting. Socials are fun get-togethers with other sororities or fraternities and we do stuff like go to Fort Fun or haunted corn mazes.

2.  Being in a sorority is not worth the cost.

Being in a sorority is pricey ,but when you know what you are paying for and break it down it is actually quite cheap and affordable. Currently, I live in the house and my dues pay for my 10 meals a week made by a chef, rent, utilities, parking, wifi, laundry, all required events, all required shirts, and a lot more! Not only is my rent cheaper than any apartment in Fort Collins, but I live in an actual house with all of my best friends.

3.  Members care more about their social life than academics.

All sororities at CSU have a GPA requirement and most are pretty strict about it. In Tri Delta, we are required to do 2 hours of studying a week with a proctor no matter your GPA so that we all stay on track. We are all students first and care a lot about our classes and grades, plus the average GPA of someone in Greek life at CSU is higher than the average GPA of someone who isn’t.

4.  To get into a sorority you will be hazed.

At CSU, there is very, very, very strict no hazing policy. Personally, I have never been hazed and don’t know any girls at CSU who have. We all take hazing very seriously and have many rules in place to be sure there is no accidental hazing. Hazing can be many different things, from forcing a new member to drink alcohol to calling new members names like “babies”, so we be sure to do absolutely no hazing and we treat all of our members the same.

5.  All sorority girls just care about their looks.

Often you will see many of us going to class in leggings and a comfort colors T-shirt with minimal to no makeup. When needed, we like to get all dressed up and look our best but often we all wear whatever is most comfortable to us. We all have our own unique style and like to show it off but that doesn’t always mean you will see us photo ready everyday.

6.  Being in a sorority won’t help your future.

Being in Tri Delta has changed my life for the better and in many ways. I am more involved with the community because we do things such as Fall cleanup where we help by raking leaves and cleaning gutters for people in the area. We all also have philanthropies that we are very dedicated to. At Tri Delta, we are partnered with St. Jude Children’s Hospital which is an incredible organization that helps sick kids and the parents never see a bill for anything. We have a ton of leadership positions as well, ranging from working with our philanthropy, to public relations, recruitment, or planning things like socials. These positions look great on a resume and can give you real life skills that will you help you in the long run.

There are a lot of stereotypes about sororities and before joining I believed quite a few of them. After joining Tri Delta though, I can honestly say that none of them are true. I love all my sisters and the sisterhood we have. Tri Delta has greatly changed my life for the better and most sorority women feel that way. If you are ever interested in joining a sorority, just talk to some of the girls who are affiliated at your school and see what they have to say about it, or you can do what I did and just jump right in and go through recruitment and find your home!
