5 Tips for Being More Productive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

We hate to say it but finals are right around the corner…EEK! This is a very stressful time for any collegiette. The thought of studying, writing papers, completing final projects and so on just make us want to cry and pretend they don’t exist. Worry not, there are ways to lessen your stress and get work done!

Set Small Measurable Goals

Jennifer Cohen, contributor for Forbes.com, writes about motivation being a muscle, one we need to work out to stay strong. Cohen writes that by starting small, with manageable goals we will achieve them faster and that feeling of success will keep us moving! So, begin with making a prioritized list, then break it down. For writing an essay break down each component and check off each one as you go (I don’t know what is more satisfying than checking off tasks on your To Do list!).

Develop a Mantra

“A mantra is a verbal statement that reinforces a positive mindset”, says Cohen. During these times of stress every collegiette could use a motivational mantra to keep our spirits high. The power of keeping an upbeat mood during finals will help you ward off the crushing feelings of stress from all your work. So come up with a statement that really resonates with you-Cohen suggests mantras such as “I am strong and can get through this”. Start off by repeating this mantra every morning aloud and you will feel yourself slowly begin to believe yourself!

Commit Publicly

It is easy to slack off and lose motivation…Netflix and snuggling in bed sound so much more appealing than that 12 page paper and powerpoint presentation you have to do. Put yourself in the position where people know what you are trying to achieve! Even if it is just telling your mom or a friend, give someone your list of goals you need to achieve because you know the next time you talk to them, everyone you know will want an update on how your work is coming along!

Give Yourself Deadlines

“Deadlines force discipline”, Steve Tobak, from Inc.com, writes. He discusses the importance of setting deadlines. He believes deadlines keep you accountable and on task. Giving yourself deadlines will help motivate you to get your work done because you don’t want to let yourself down and give yourself more work later.

Learn to Say No, and definitely not Maybe

Consider your goals and the time you mapped out for them. We all like to help people, it makes us feel good but it can make us stress and freak out even more, especially when we know we don’t have the time to help out everyone who asks. If it doesn’t fit into your schedule and it isn’t a priority, a goal or fun-say no. If you have a hard time doing so, explain the situation and they should understand.

We hope these tips help you all stay motivated and on top of your work in the next few weeks. As always remember to get enough sleep and stay hydrated- here is a link of foods you should eat to keep your body well while you are stressed. Good luck and just keep at it! The work will get done!

I am a sophomore here at Connecticut College. Go Camels! My plan is to double major in Computer Science and Art, tying them together with the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology. My home town is Stormville,NY a tiny hamlet two hours north of the big NYC. This year on campus I am a Student Advisor for incoming freshmen, a Peer Tutor as well as a Her Campus writer. I'm really into public art, mason jars, coffee, snuggly sweaters and kittens.
