Between Instagram and Tiktok, in today’s day and age, it’s easier than ever to spend hours scrolling through social media. While social media is a great way to stay connected with friends (especially while we’re in college), it’s crucial that you don’t let it take over your life. During the early 2020 quarantine, social media was something that helped us pass the time. However, now that the world is finally returning to a sense of normalcy, it’s important to focus on quitting those unhealthy habits. Here are 10 tips on how to decrease your screen time that will lead to a more productive and fulfilling lifestyle.

  1. Don’t eat in front of screens—be present when eating meals.
  2. Set time limits on particular time-sucking apps (you can do this under “Screen Time” in your iPhone’s settings!).
  3. Put your phone in your pocket or leave it in the car to stay in the moment when you’re with other people.
  4. Read a physical book instead of reading on your phone.
  5. Instead of watching a show or a movie, listen to a podcast! My favorites are Lexi Hidalgo’s Moments or Emma Chamberlain’s Anything Goes.
  6. Put your phone across (or even out of) the room when you’re trying to fall asleep at night.
  7. Turn off social media notifications.
  8. Form a screen-free study group that will hold each other accountable to stay off your phones while studying.
  9. Post less on social media so you’re less compelled to check your apps.
  10. If you tend to turn to social media for serotonin when you’re having a bad day, try going for a walk, journaling, practicing yoga, or baking instead.

While there is nothing wrong with laying in bed and scrolling on social media every once in a while, science has proven it can be detrimental to your mental health. It is possible to cut down on your screen time and find other ways to spend your free time. Cutting back on social media is a gradual process, so try to push yourself outside of your comfort zone by trying a few of these tips!
