This week we asked our chapter members about Valentine’s Day. What are their thoughts? Is it something they like to celebrate? What has or what will their Valentine’s Day look like? Here’s what they had to say!

“ChildLike Crush feeling”

Chaeli is ready for the sweetness of this love-filled day. “Valentine’s Day is a day to express your feelings. In the past this day has always reminded me of when you got to make a mailbox in elementary school and get Valentines from your classmates. It was always so cute observing who got an extra candy or put ‘Love,’ as their sign off instead of ‘From,’. This childlike crush feeling is something I have always held close. As I grew up I found this feeling in the past Valentine’s Days through romantic comedies and buying myself candy to recreate that nostalgia. Now that I have a partner, that childlike feeling hasn’t gone away, but has blossomed into a deeper appreciation for the expression of love. This year, I plan to watch those movies together with them and eat sweets to our hearts’ content.”

“what you make of it”

Brooke isn’t quite sure how she’s feeling. “I have mixed, complex emotions about Valentine’s Day. Is love a neurochemical spasm of obsession? Is V-Day just a capitalist cash grab for marketing corporations? Am I simply a bitter hobbit complaining about the happiness of couples? Potentially yes to all, but my main opinion is that Valentine’s Day is what you make of it. I plan ahead to treat myself to some yummy treats and feel-good cinema when I’m feeling blue about the state of my pathetic love life. Sometimes I’ll host a girl’s party and have a chocolate fondue fountain to drown fruit instead of our sorrows. One day I’ll celebrate with a beau. But in the meantime, I will manually create a fun day for myself because life is too short to hate pink chocolate hearts and oversized teddy bears.”

“self-love gets me through”

Alauni knows it’s her feelings for herself that matter most. “Valentine’s Day is usually just any old day for me. I usually try to do something fun, but I don’t have a sweetheart to celebrate it with, but self-love gets me through.”

“showing love to your loved ones”

Shaunny has some similar thoughts to Brooke about Valentine’s Day being what YOU make it; “I wouldn’t say Valentine’s Day is my all-time favorite holiday, but I do like the aesthetic of Valentine’s Day. I also like the idea of showing love to your loved ones. Every year, I give gifts to my loved ones, and sometimes I get creative with the gifts. I believe that Valentine’s Day is what YOU make it.”

“more fun when spent with friends and gal-pals”

Gabby is ready to spend the day with those who really matter, her friends! “V-day is fun when you’re getting gifts and roses, but in my opinion, it’s much more fun when spent with friends and gal-pals, eating ice cream and watching a late night rom-com.”

“not just romantically”

Ana is recognizing that Valentine’s Day is open to all kinds of love! “I think Valentine’s Day is a fun opportunity to celebrate all the people you love, not just romantically. This year, my friends and I are watching a movie and eating cake together.”

“I’m not much of a Valentine’s Day participant”

Allison has some mixed feelings about the holiday. “I honestly have no strong feelings for Valentine’s Day. As a kid, it was a way to get candy in school and now as a single young adult I watch happy couples celebrate their love. I do make an effort to tell my friends I love them and make them feel special, but otherwise I’m not much of a Valentine’s Day participant.”
