Five Year Plan or Three Word Nightmare?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

A good friend of mine was recently telling me about a paper that he has to write for a Communications class about his “Five Year Plan.” For someone like me, those three words alone can make me palpitate a little. So why, as 18-22 year olds, do we have to make decisions about the rest of our lives when we can’t even decide if it’s worth it to walk to Wendy’s for a Frosty or not?

I have a pretty great secret though. We don’t have to make those decisions because someone already has our next 5 years – heck, our next 100 years – covered, and his name is Jesus. Except for Wendy’s, go treat yourself. There is so much pressure put on high school and college students to know what highway we want to take when we are really all just passengers. In Jeremiah 1:5, God tells us “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.”

Y’all. He KNOWS you. He knows you better than you know yourself. This is something to be pumped about because, if He knows you before you are even created, then He obviously knows everything that is going to happen in your life! Now I’ll be honest, I’m a control freak and I like predictability. One thing I struggle with the most is reminding myself that Jesus didn’t die for me so that I can sit here and waste my time stressing about something that is absolutely out of my control. But when I finally do let go, the difference in my attitude is astounding. In the words of the oh-so-dreamy Thomas Rhett, “You make your plans, and you hear God laughing.  Life changes and I wouldn’t trade it for the world”.

So take some time today and embrace this crazy life that we live. We are incredibly blessed to attend such an amazing university, and we are even more blessed to have Jesus walking by our side to our classes, waiting with us in that dreaded Starbucks line in Cooper, and leading us through the 5 seconds we have to register for classes. Sit back and enjoy the ride because God is a pretty good driver…one that even the CUPD can’t pull over.

Hey guys, my name is Sara Gates! I am a Kappa Delta here at Clemson and can usually be found in an Eno by the lake or at Smoothie King. I am a marking major with a minor in communications and I love horses, my family, and Jesus...channeling my inner Journey right now. Go tigers!
