5 Things to Do on Valentine’s Day If You’re Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

For the past 19 years I haven’t had plans on Valentine’s Day and I expect this year to be no different. However, over the years, I have developed some habits that have helped me learn to appreciate myself as single on a day made for doubles. Here are 5 tips I recommend to make the most out of your Valentine’s Day ladies.

1. Buy yourself a heart filled with chocolates

For a long time, I thought these were only reserved for cute couples in the movies. But, fear not all my single ladies, one of the most liberating things was when I went and bought myself a heart filled with chocolates. I wanted the delicious variations they included and I knew I wouldn’t be getting one on Valentine’s Day. They are sold at Target, Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, Rite-aid, Bi-Lo, and most grocery stores.  Go get a box, it’s imperative in the 5-step process.

2. Watch “How to be Single”

I love this movie and every time I watch it my heartstrings get seriously pulled. This romantic comedy (what else is Valentine’s Day movie binging good for?) takes you through the life of four women and how they’re grappling with their careers, romantic decisions, and social lives all while trying to discover who they really are. Simple, right? While you’re at it, go ahead and pull out those chocolates you bought and eat them while you watch this movie, trust me you’ll need ‘em.

3. Grab a nice dinner

Just because you’re alone, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice meal. Do yourself a favor, dress-up, and go get some actual food. You deserve to eat food other than what’s served in the dining hall every night! Or, if you don’t want to eat alone, grab a gal pal and head to your favorite fancy restaurant to chow down and celebrate each other. There’s no shame in this ladies! Of course, if dressing up and going out isn’t enticing to you, order to go and pick it up so you can enjoy and relax in your jammies.

4. Pamper yourself

You like facemasks? Girl do that facemask. You like hot bubble baths? Start one and let the bubbles be plentiful. Take the hottest shower under the sun for as long as you want. You want to light some candles? Girl, treat your self and light four (not in your dorm though). The point is, do what makes you feel good. You’ll find me slathered with lotion on my body, a face mask drying on my face, the fluffiest pajamas on, and covered by a blanket.

5. Turn your phone off

Sometimes we can get distracted by what we see on social media. On Valentine’s Day do you really want to see a bunch of “Happy Valentine’s Day to my love” posts? Sure they’re cute, but they don’t make you feel any better about yourself. Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook will all be there tomorrow, so tonight take a break from social media. For that reason, I’ll be turning my phone off and not because I hate cute pictures, but because I’ll be taking the night to celebrate me.
