How To Make Healthy, Sweet Choices

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clarion chapter.

Trick your brain! Your body will thank you

Though the weather may suggest otherwise right now, summer is on its way. And ladies, we want to be ready for it! This doesn’t mean starve yourself and be miserable to shed some pounds. Rather, you are going to want to feel confident and beautiful in your own skin. And yes, it never hurts to set the sweets aside to start your journey to feeling refreshed.

There are so many sweet tasting alternatives to start being healthy. Fruit is your new best friend. Cut up some strawberries, pick up an apple, or peel some oranges. This is how you trick your brain. Your body will be treated with antioxidants and you will find this habit to be well worth the switch. If you love chocolate as much as I do, you don’t have to just abandon it. Go dark! Dark chocolate is the go-to alternative to the decadent dessert that will keep you on track to eating healthier.

How about cookies you may ask? Change the way you think about them! You can make some pretty tasty cookies with just three ingredients: oats, bananas, and dark chocolate. For many people, the taste and texture may take some time to adjust to, but they are worth a try.

Let’s be honest: cutting sweets out can be such a pain. If you are lacking in motivation now, just tie your cravings in with a task you want to accomplish. For example, if you are studying, tell yourself you’ve earned a small treat after so many pages. Be fair to yourself though! Try and make it worth the treat; avoid munching the whole time you are studying. The good news is, if the munchies do kick in, there are more alternatives to keep on your desk or beside you in bed. Once again, fruit can be a great choice; just don’t go overboard because they do contain sugars. Also, unsalted nuts and cheeses are nice to nibble on.

A benefit of cutting up foods or eating nuts is that you continue to trick your brain. This is so important when trying to be healthy. When you eat things piece by piece, often you will feel as though you have eaten more. You feel surprisingly fuller, which is ideal for the rest of the day. Instead of those big meals, try healthy snacks throughout the day.

To sum it all up: Trick your brain! If you follow these tricks and get your brain to do the same, your stomach will thank you in the long run. Summer here we come!
