As we know, the decisions we make lead to a specific outcome. There are times where our choices do not align with the results we want for ourselves. While we can’t undo what has been done, it is important to take the necessary steps to move forward. By making the conscious decision to seek improvement, you are bettering yourself and the person you are becoming. You can do this by creating achievable goals.

With how quickly time passes us by, we may look at ourselves and feel as if we’re behind. The nerves of not knowing what the future holds may sometimes lead how we go about our days. The in-between of what once was, and what is soon to be is meant to be a period of discovery; it is a point where we are building our footing in life so we may set ourselves up for success.

Ask: What am I striving for? In a world where the possibilities are endless, it is crucial to know what is true to you. Do not feel the need to conform to the will of others; find solace in being different. Once you have identified your “what” it is important you set specific goals for yourself. By this, you are envisioning and committing yourself to a certain achievement. These objectives invoke accountability while allowing you to obtain the desired result.

Goal-setting is the act of curating deliberate plans to accomplish a desired end result; a goal is attainable, measurable, and fulfilling. When approaching determining your goals, it is important to set a timeline. With this, you can differentiate your short-term goals from your long-term goals. The most effective way to achieve your goals is to leverage smaller milestones as stepping stones toward your larger objectives. For instance, as someone who wants to strengthen my writing skills, to then utilize in my career (long-term), I joined my university’s HERcampus chapter as part of the writing committee, releasing articles 1-2 times a month (short-term).

While some achievements may seem out of reach, be sure to acknowledge what is in your control: response, resilience, and mindfulness. Know, you did not come this far, just to come this far. The posture of your heart will translate into your actions, therefore, the good you pour out, will, in turn, pour into you.
