Spring is here, and outdoor workouts are officially in season! As the weather warms, try one of these ideas from the HC Chatham team to get moving.

Go For A Walk or a Run

Business Team Member Casey Deer recommends meeting up with a friend for a quick stroll, and Writer Paige Owens thinks going for a run is a great spring workout. Whether you traipse across campus, head for a quick hike in Mellon Park, or take a walking trip into Oakland, you’ll get to appreciate the outdoors and get fit.

PED141: Walking for Fitness is offered this Maymester. Five days a week, 10am-10:50am, you’ll get a serious workout and work toward a wellness credit. If you’re not registered, you can contact the registrar to see if there’s still space in the class.

Walk Your Dog

Both Casey Deer and Blog Section Editor Onastasia Youssef suggest going for a walk with your cute companion. “If you have a pet or can get a part-time job pet sitting, there is nothing like taking a dog outside and giving him a walk,” says Onastasia. “On a clear, sunny day, he will definitely love to play fetch or will run alongside you as you jog through town!”

If you don’t have a furry friend of your own, the Animal Rescue League is a great place to volunteer close to campus. After signing up, you’ll take a two hour training session to be qualified to play with the dogs!

Equilibristic Juggling

“Whether you want to juggle balls, poi, staffs, or devil sticks, it will help with your hand-eye coordination,” says Photographer Rosemary Davies. “Additionally, it is an easy way to get distracted with so much fun! You will hardly notice that you are breaking a sweat when juggling.”

Stop by a meeting of The Legerdemain Circus School on campus! They’re usually on Fridays, but check myChatham Happenings for specific times before you go.

Ride Your Bike

Paige suggests riding a bike off campus instead of taking a bus. With so much support for cyclists in the Pittsburgh area, you’ll probably meet new friends along the way. Chatham was even designated as a Bike Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists!

Visit the Bike Pittsburgh website for maps, events and other resources for cyclists in the area.

And if you ever need to get your bike repaired, just stop by Chatham’s own bike shop in the basement of Woodland!

Orienteering

“A good spring workout challenge is the sport of orienteering,” says Rosemary. “In orienteering, you use a map and a compass to navigate from point-to-point. It is perfect for getting outdoors, and it’s a ‘mind exercise.'”

“While orienteering is mostly popular in Scandinavia, there are multiple orienteering groups around the United States to get involved in,” Rosemary shares. “In Pennsylvania, there is the Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club (WPOC) which plans a meet (orienteering event) each month.”
