Fall Fabulous to Spring Spectacular: 7 Ways to Transition Your Makeup Regimen Through the Seasons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chatham chapter.

Ah, what lovely weather we’re having! Said nobody in Pittsburgh ever. Though Pittsburgh is still in flux about weather, spring is, in fact, here! With the weather changing, it’s that time of year where we want to start switching up our makeup routines. From finishes to colors to the way you set your face, warmer weather means a big change!

Here are my suggestions for some simple transitions you can make:

Matte to Glossy

I love my matte lipsticks in the winter—they make everything bolder and brighter (not to mention that they have awesome staying-power). However, around springtime, I like to go for a glossier lip for a slightly more natural look. These L’Oreal lip-glosses have crazy staying power and stay shiny for hours!

Matte to Dewy

Mattifying my skin in the winter is essential to my routine, but I love a dewy, glowing look for warmer weather. I switch out mattifying foundation for a BB cream—these will moisturize, provide a little bit of coverage, and most even have SPF which will protect you from the sun (if it ever decides to make an appearance)! I’ve been using this Maybelline one for years—it evens my skintone and keeps me looking fresh-faced all day!

Setting Powder to Setting Spray

Matte powder has been a staple in my makeup bag all winter. But when going for a more glowing look, I want something a little lighter. The Urban Decay All-Nighter spray is the Holy Grail of makeup setters because it doesn’t change the finish foundation at all, but makes sure nothing on my face budges for a good 10 hours.

Red to Pink

In the words of Taylor Swift, “And I got that red lip classic thing that you like.” A statement lip is perfect for any time of year, and this winter, I was all about those reds. For spring, though, I like to switch it up with a bright fuchsia that packs a punch but still looks sweet (not to mention shows off my tan!). I turn to the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Sweetheart for a popping pink that will last through lunch!

Neutrals to Brights

The neutral smoky eye is a standard for the winter months, but as we get into spring, I think it’s time to have a little more fun with eye makeup. Play up your eyes with greens, purples, even blues (and yes, there are ways of doing this without bad ’90s flashbacks!). If you’re new to this style, try adding a pop of color just to your upper or lower lash line and keeping the rest of the eye neutral. The Stila In the Garden palette is my favorite for ultra-pigmented brights.

Blush to Highlighting Blush

Winter got me paler than the ghost on Snapchat, so blush is a must for me. Blush is essential to any makeup regimen year-round, but I like to switch from a flat blush to one with shimmer/highlight mixed in. This brightens up my face, gives a slight flush, and keeps me looking awake even in the midst of finals week. Benefit’s Dandelion blush is my absolute favorite for that perfect glowing flush!

Contouring to Bronzer

Contouring is all the rage at the moment (thanks Kim K!). But check out Insta on any given day and you’ll see thousands of women all over the world chiseling jawlines and redefining cheekbones. As we get into the warmer months, I like to bring the contrast harshness down a couple notches and go for a more subtle, blended look. This bronzer from Rimmel is super inexpensive, lasts all day, and never looks orange!
