5 Benefits of Being in a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

Usually when we hear the words “long distance relationship,” we cringe. We pity those who have to endure months of practiced patience as they console themselves with skype dates while they wait eagerly for the day they’ll be united with their loved one.

Long distance relationships are hard. They put our strength and mental capacity to the test. They are difficult, but they are also rewarding.

1. Long distance relationships give you the comfort that your relationship is more than just physical attraction. If you were just with each other for the sex, then your relationship would surely dissipate once a thousand miles were placed between you. Going through a long distance relationship means that you and your significant other care about each other on a deeper level.

2. Ever heard of the phrase “absence makes the heart grow fonder”? It’s true. Spending time away from your boyfriend or girlfriend will make you appreciate them more. When we see someone every day, we get used to them and moreover fail to notice all the little things that they do. By giving each other some space, you will grow deeper in your love for each other.

3. You get SO much free time. Relationships are best when you can have your own life in addition to the time you spend with your babe. With long distance relationships, you’ll get to work on yourself and start all those projects that you’ve been putting off due to lack of time. You’ll get to grow in your self-love, which will then transfer into your love of your significant other. Being able to be okay by yourself is necessary and long distance relationships make that personal growth possible.

4. You get to experience those lovely phone calls and talk about things that really matter. When you’re physically with someone, many times your topics of conversation can revolve around trivial things such as choosing where to get dinner. When you’re apart, you’re forced to look back on your daily activities and describe them to your babe. You learn how to story-tell, which opens the door to deeper conversations and excitement for waiting for that phone call at the end of the day. You also both learn how to communicate effectively, which will do wonders for your relationship. Not to mention those cute Facetime pictures you get to take.

5. You always have something to look forward to. Whenever you’re having a low day, you can remind yourself of the countdown until you get to reunite with your loved one. Hugging, kissing, and touching them will be amazing since it’s been a while since you’ve seen them. Not to mention, you can comfort yourself knowing that if you both can survive the distance, you can pretty much survive anything.

So remember long distance relationships are not only possible…they can be great.
