It’s finally October, and do you know what that means? It’s time to get spooky. That’s right; we have a whole month to party like the Sanderson Sisters, and if you have an affinity for eerie aesthetics, it’s your time to shine.

If you’re new to UNC, welcome and get ready for one of the biggest nights on Franklin St. (besides when we beat dook or win the natty). Halloween is a sacred tradition for our amazing university and everyone goes all out. People are basically going to be talking about it for the whole month. Sometimes, even your professors will modify deadlines for after the big day….

Now with a holiday like All Hallows’ Eve approaching, you’re probably thinking about hosting a POPPIN’ costume party, a graveyard smash, if you will, and you’re going to need some tunes to get it started. I’m sure you’re totally capable of finding a generic playlist on your own, but I’m here to save you the time and effort. I’ve picked some major classics and some instrumentals that will add some flair to your vibe. To highlight some of these jams and give you a taste of what you can expect, I’m going to share the first TEN songs on the playlist and why I chose them!

1. “Thriller” – Michael Jackson

I think it’s illegal to have a Halloween party without this song. It’s undoubtedly one of Michael Jackson’s most famous songs and the anthem of the undead. Pro-tip: learn the line dance for the song and teach everyone! Make the King of Pop proud.

2. “I Put a Spell on You” – Christone “Kingfish” Ingram

Spotify doesn’t have the incredible Bette Midler version from Hocus Pocus, but this one from the Luke Cage soundtrack is funky and haunting. The drums, the bass, his voice. If you’re not ready to break out some dark lipstick and start a seance, I don’t know what you’re doing.

3. “Time Warp” – Rocky Horror Picture Show

Honestly, the whole Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack could be your Halloween playlist, and it would be the best party playlist ever. This ICONIC song will definitely have everyone on the dance floor. “It’s just a jump to the left….”

4. “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” – The Clash

Where are my Stranger Things fans at? Take a trip to the Upside Down, channel your inner Jonathan Byers and get down to this 1980s CLASSIC. Have an air guitar or an air drum competition and get into this one.

5. “Ghostbusters” – Ray Park Jr.

Nothing but respect for MY Ghostbusters: Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones. WALKTHEMOON and Fall Out Boy did versions of this but the original is still my personal favorite.

6. “Seven Wonders” – Fleetwood Mac

You CANNOT celebrate this holiday without honoring our White Witch. Get your coven together and perform those Seven Wonders to find out who the TRUE Supreme is… will it be you?

 7. “This is Halloween” – The Citizens of Halloweentown

Tim Burton created a film that can be enjoyed equally for two very different holidays, and WE MUST RESPECT THAT!

8. “The Purple Eater” – Sheb Woodley

Maybe it’s just me, but this 1950s classic gives me major Twilight Zone vibes. I just picture old-school drive-in movies with cheesy graphics. We love a retro throwback.

 9. “Superstition” – Raven Symone

Okay, I love Stevie Wonder with my whole heart but Raven DID THAT when she did this song for the Haunted Mansion movie. Also, her choreo… iconic.

10. “Monster Mash” – Bobby “Boris” Pickett

Just an honest classic that everyone loves. I seriously don’t know anyone that doesn’t go hard when they hear this. Bonus points if you can remember the Just Dance choreography.

There are many more songs to jam to on my “Ultimate Halloween Party Playlist” so please enjoy! Whether you truly use mine for your spooky event, or you just use it for inspiration. Have fun, stay safe, and I hope you find a BOO to dance with this Halloween.
