Do you know that we can talk to the dead? It’s as simple as your campus library, an E-Reader, Barnes & Noble, or a local bookstore. They tell us that leaders are readers. It is also said that not reading is no better than illiteracy. The philosophy of Stoicism is one of the vast examples of how one can speak with and learn from the dead. Founded in ancient Greece, by Zeno of Citium and then further supported and remembered by the big three known as Marcus Aurelius, Epiticus, and Seneca the relevance and reward of Stoicism persist. Being that each of these individuals were men it must be clarified that Stoicism has no gender. Stoicism teaches one how to improve self-control, actions, and emotions. This in theory can lead us to The Good Life. Please enjoy using these tips from Stoicism to enhance your 2025 resolutions.

Understand that there will always be uncontrollables in life. We do not get to choose where we come from, we can not speed up traffic, and we deal with constant unknowns. Stoicism teaches us that we must recognize these uncontrollables and let them go. By doing so you take responsibility for your life and focus completely on things you can control.

Be patient with people. Stoicism will always call for patience. We live in a frustrating confusing world that brings many obstacles. Often, people act foolishly, lack decency, and can be selfish. With stoicism, one is reminded to have patience in every situation. It is important to be kind and understanding of others. With this philosophy, you will be encouraged to view these obstacles and improve through the challenge.

Be strict with yourself. Stoicism will direct you to give grace to others and their shortcomings, but you must hold yourself accountable. With rigorous self-accountability progress and growth will follow organically. This is where the importance of self-discipline is learned.

There is always another door. When one path stops the opportunity of countless new directions emerges. Look at a closed door as a chance to try something new. With each new path, the ability to grow, learn, and change is irrefutable.
