10 Admirable Black & Latina Women You Should Follow on Instagram

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

Instagram is one of the greatest social media apps to-date. It’s not only filled with personal accounts, but accounts dedicated to various categories such as photography, fashion, fitness, make-up, music, etc. There’s something for everyone. The app has become an outlet in which people and companies are able to promote their brand, interests, and lifestyles.

I will admit that I spend a lot of my time stalking talented and inspiring women on Instagram. If you’re bored with your timeline and need a little something to brighten it up, I’ve composed a list of my favorite Black & Latina women on Instagram who’ll aid in sprucing up your daily scroll.

1.) Princess Nokia (@princessnokia)

Princess Nokia is an Afro-Nuyorican, indie-alternative, Hip Hop, and R&B artist hailing from New York City. She is currently a nominee for the upcoming XXL Freshmen Class and in a relationship with spoken word artist, Mike Davis, better known as Hood Profet.

2.) Yaris Sanchez (@yaris_sanchez)

Yaris is a former video vixen and erotic dancer turned model, artist, and theatre/film student. Leaving her past life behind, she’s the epitome of what happens when you embrace who you are and take control of your life.  She’s in a relationship with rap artist, Ab-Soul. Being that they’re both very much spiritually enlightened, they seem nothing less than perfect for each other.

3.) Aleali May (@alealimay)

Aleali May is a model, image consultant, and fashion blogger. She has collaborated with notable brands such as Nike, Audi USA, and Adidas. Check out her blog here: http://alealimay.com.

4.) Brilliant Garcia (@illbrill)

Brilliant Garcia is a DJ, visiual artist, and creative director from Los Angelos, California. She established “No Service,” a phone-free, recurring live art experience at the Belasco Theatre, combining music, theater, and visual art.

 5.) SZA (@sza)

I couldn’t make this list without including Top Dawg Entertainment’s official first lady, whose album we’re all patiently waiting for. The orthodox Muslim child was signed to TDE in July of 2013, and although it’s been a while that we’ve been blessed with a new project, her alluring Instagram photos are just enough to keep us afloat.

6.) Yara Shahidi (@yarashahidi)

Yara Shahidi is like a breath of fresh air. You may know her as the little girl from the 2009 film, “Imagine That,” starring Eddie Murphy, or most recently as Zoey from the hit-show, Black-ish (created by Clark Atlanta’s very own, Kenya Barris).  She’s recently scored partnerships with Teen Vogue, Beyonce’s Ivy Park, Asos, and many more. The 17-year old actress and activist has proven herself in so many ways; not to mention, scoring a letter of recommendation written by none other than Michelle Obama.

7.) Kali Uchis (@kaliuchis)

Colombian singer, Kali Uchis, hails from Virginia. You would swear she time traveled here from the 60’s. Gaining much exposure from her feature on Tyler, The Creator’s 2015 album “Cherry Bomb,” this soulful singer is sure to stand out anywhere she goes with her nostalgic and melodic sounds; on top of her platinum blonde, and occasionally, pink locks. Her aesthetically pleasing Instagram feed will force you to press her follow button.

8.) Briana Shaneè Wilson (@eenahsanairb)

Briana Shaneè Wilson is the creator of the popular clothing brands, MATTE and Working Girl, filled with essential basics that are ideal for any woman with a love for clothing with minimal design, comfort, and femininity. The brand was launched in August of 2014 and has since been worn by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Draya Michelle, and Karrueche Tran.

9.) Alex Elle (@alex_elle)

Alex Elle is a motivational writer and creative director. Her passion for story-telling, poetry, and narrative writing are infused with life lessons and self-celebration. Her Instagram feed is filled with photos of herself and her family, as well as many affirmations that always seem to be right on time.

10.) Vashtie Kola (@vashtie)

You may recognize Vashtie as Pharrell’s super-cute ex-girlfriend, but she is so much more than a pretty face. She’s a director, DJ, designer and self-made boss. She was the first woman to design a pair of Jordan’s, recently collaborated with Puma, directed Justin Bieber’s very first music video, and hosts parties every Thursday night at Webster Hall where she DJ’s. But of course, she’s still a very pretty face.
