TUDUM – The best festival to Netflix lovers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Do you watch Netflix series? Have you ever thought about being able to get into your favorite scenarios?  With Netflix’s TUDUM Festival all of this is possible. Taking pictures on the Stranger Things cemetery, inside Wednesday’s room, in Gabriel’s restaurant in Paris or even in front of the Bridgerton’s family house are a few of the things to be enjoyed in this event. But if your dream is about seeing your favorite actor who plays your favorite character, with TUDUM, this dream can also come true.

TUDUM is back home!

In 2020, the first TUDUM ever happened in São Paulo. Created as a way to bring the public to see all the new Netflix projects, the festival was a success. It went so well that in 2021 the festival became international. It was online due to the coronavirus pandemic and was broadcast to the entire world.

This year, TUDUM came back home and, this time, in person again. The festival happened between 16, 17 and 18 of June. The event was totally free but it was necessary to get the tickets on the internet before going to Parque Ibirapuera, where it happened. Unfortunately, all the tickets were sold out, but those who couldn’t get one, had the opportunity to watch live on Netflix’s YouTube on Saturday night.

The public was very excited. In the line, before the first day of TUDUM the engineering student Laís, 21, said that she expected to see a Dark scenario, which is her favorite show, but, unfortunately, it wouldn’t  be possible because it is already an old Netflix series. Her friend, also an engineering student, Renata, 21, said that “the cool part is to get free little gifts” and was very excited to see the Stranger Things place.

On Friday and Sunday (16th and 18th), only the space with scenarios and all the activations were open. Among the attractions, there was a roller coaster track from Stranger Things, a climbing wall from the Heart of Stone, a pall mall game from Bridgerton and the “green light, red light” game from Round 6. In specific hours, famous actors got into the main stage to talk with the public and promote their series or movie.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gal Gadot are a couple of famous names that came to Brazil just to be at the TUDUM festival. On Friday, Chris Hemsworth was one of the actors that tagged his presence, and, after it, he gave an interview at “Podpah”, a brazilian popular videocast. Henry Cavill, the forever superman, was on the stage on Friday too, promoting his TV series The Witcher.

On Sunday, some actors that showed up there were: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Jaren Lewison and Darren Barnet from Never Have I Ever, André Lamoglia e Valentina Zenere from Elite and from a brazilian show De Volta aos 15, Maisa Silva.

The livestream

Saturday was the most awaited day, because Netflix invited all their famous stars to present new information about their shows and the most popular series on the platform. On the main stage, still in the Parque Ibirapuera, the show started at 5:30 PM alongside the live international broadcast. Before it, there was a “red carpet” where que press and the influencers could interview and talk with the Netflix actors.

At the “Pavilhão”, which was called the places where all the scenarios were, the public could see the Sintonia cast: Christian Malheiros, Jottapê e Bruna Mascarenhas. The Brazilian series will have its 4th season released on July 25th.

Among the news that were presented to the public, there were trailers and release dates to new seasons from everybody’s favorite shows. Series such as De Volta aos 15, Sintonia, Outer Banks, Avatar: The Last Airbender- Live Action and One Piece got a brand new trailer for their next seasons.

Heartstopper, one of the public favorites, got the first minutes of the second season’s first episode presented to the audience, to make all the fans more excited. The next season will be released on August 3rd.

Actors such as Ben Padgley and Lily Collins recorded a special teaser to talk about their characters and what the public can expect about the future in their series. You fans are waiting for the conclusion of the show in its 5th season and Emily in Paris fans need a lot of answers in the 4th season.

For the Bridgerton fans the first pictures from Penelope and Colin on the 3rd season were show.

The hosts, who presented an important part from the whole festival, were Maisa Silva (De Volta aos 15),  Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) and Chase Stokes (Outer Banks).

What you could find at the event?

The festival structure had a food court, where you could find popular series meals, such as the Stranger Things‘ waffles and pizza. Most of the places selling food had their names inspired in a Netflix show. You wouldn’t have to worry about water, in the entrance everybody got a TUDUM tematic cup and there were water refills throughout the whole place, as well as popcorn that you could get for free too.

All the attendees got a lot of little gifts, after all, the scenarios that you visited, besides a lot of beautiful photos, you could get series posters. An attraction reserved for games, you could get different pins for losing or winning. For those who wanted to buy something, such as clothes, books, tote bags, socks and a lot of other things there was a TUDUM store.

If you are a cosplay fan you could see a lot of characters from different shows. In The Witcher space, there was Geralt of Rivia ready to take pics with you. Even the fans went there in cosplays. Igor Gimenes, 26, a veterinarian, was dressed as Nick Nelson, from Heartstopper and told his expectations for TUDUM were taking a lot of photos and having fun. “Cosplayers like to be noticed, so we came to show ourselves”, completed.

For Wednesday fans, there was an entire set fully decorated in the series theme. In front of the room windows, Wednesday (to all the brazilian fans, Wandinha) was playing a cello. Due to the incredible show’s success, it had one of the biggest lines.

The Netflix korean series had a special place, the Koreatown. There you could find tradicional food and the scenarios from the famous doramas that are becoming more and more popular nowadays. Extraordinary Attorney Woo and All of Us Are Dead are examples of what you would see at this space on TUDUM.

Things that can be better in the next TUDUM

One of the main reasons to go to TUDUM is the opportunity to see famous actors that everybody likes. A schedule with who is going to be on stage at different hours, warning that all times and guests can change and you need to pay attention on stage. However, there were just a few screens in the whole space. In this situation, if you weren’t in front of it you couldn’t know what was happening there.

The same thing happened with the sound, it was pretty hard to understand all the things that were going on stage, because the music and the sentences couldn’t be heard from other parts of the event.

Another problem happened with the line’s organizations. In each scenario from each series the people that were working there gave us a different instruction about how the reservation was happening. To be able to get into some experiences you needed to do an online reservation in a specific hour, even for the ones that didn’t have a big line. And, in some cases, they didn’t ask for it. This system was very confusing.

As some attractions on the main stage were too close from the opening hour, those who were still waiting in line to get into the event couldn’t have the opportunity to see, even arriving an hour before the beginning of the festival. If you weren’t one of the first in line, you didn’t have the chance to see Henry Cavill, on Friday, for example.

All of these things can be improved for the next TUDUM, since this event is a success and brings fans together to see all their favorite series and actors. We hope it keeps happening for a lot more years, mixing Brazilian culture with the most famous shows in the entire world.
