Unconditional love is the most unique way to love someone, love that doesn’t need explanations, when you just accept someone in the way they are. This love can be defined as the true and genuine form of altruism, or a love that mothers cherish for their daughters and sons.

But the feeling of being a daughter feels different. The connection and the confidentiality turn mothers and their daughters into this complex relationship, where both parts live and learn together. She’s the best friend you know you will never be apart.

1- Slipping through my fingers (ABBA)

I couldn’t start this list with any other song, “Slipping through my fingers” by ABBA never fails to set everyone in tears. The song is mostly known from the musical Mamma Mia, whose interpretation keeps the emotional weight presented in the lyrics.

The song addresses the passage of time through a mother’s eye, seeing her daughter grow up and starting to live her own life, away from her mother. It’s about feeling the time go by and trying to enjoy every little moment.

2- Minha mãe (Maria Bethânia & Gal Costa)

“Minha mãe” (My Mother), by the Brazilian singers Maria Bethânia e Gal Costa, addresses the pain of loss and missing your mother. However, sadness doesn’t permeate the entire song: the hope and strength of living for her mother is present until the very last lyrics.

3- The best day (Taylor Swift)

As we all know, Taylor Swift has a song for everything, even for her mother, Andrea Swift.

“The best day” by Taylor Swift talks about the memories between her and her mother, emphasizing the moments when her mother offered her comfort, one of the greatest things mothers do. Towards the end of the song, she recalls that her mother was always there to see her shine, even from afar.

The music video reinforces all the memories presented in the song and makes it even more emotional.

4- Oh mother (Christina Aguilera)

“Oh mother” by Christina Aguilera is even more emotional than the other songs. It portrays a reality experienced by many mothers and daughters around the world.

The song tells Christina’s own story with her mother, a victim of domestic violence who had the courage to break the cycle of violence for her children. The most beautiful aspect of the song is the sense of sisterhood and gratitude Aguilera expresses toward her mother, recognizing her strength in such a difficult situation.

Being a mother and/or a daughter will never be easy. It’s a complex relationship that we sometimes can’t fully understand. However, she is the person you run to when you need love and affection, on your darkest or brightest days.
