Taylor Swift: 5 underrated songs that are hidden treasures

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Taylor Swift is one of the most successful singers around the world nowadays, with many famous hits such as Shake it Off, Blank Space and 22. Apart from being an amazing songwriter and performer, she also has a very delicate and pleasant voice. Her lyrics are impressive and certainly very far from shallow. With metaphors and poetical language, diving into its universe can be a great surprise.

Despite that fact, amongst Taylor’s 10 original studio albums and 2 re-recorded studio albums, there are many hidden treasures that are not very known and did not get the recognition they deserved. Read now about 5 underrated songs by Taylor Swift!

“Don’t Blame Me” (Reputation)

The album Reputation represents a big transformation in Taylor’s career! The sweet singer of You belong with me, Love story and Enchanted tried something different and the result was a big success!

Look What You Made me Do and …Ready for it?, both with international praise, became famous songs of this American singer. On the other hand, Don’t Blame Me, also a big Reputation production, was not as recognized and is rarely mentioned in Swift’s hits list. Curious about this one? So don’t waste any time and go listen to Reputation’s track four!

Daylight (Lover)

“Daylight” is probably one of the most romantic songs of all time. The big metaphor of the song is that Taylor, the songwriter, once believed that love was burning red or black and white. But now she realized that it is golden like daylight. She said that her entire life before meeting her current love was like a dark night and now it is a beautiful daylight.

The lyrics are also a reference to Red, another song of Swift’s written years ago that has the line “loving him was red”. So if you want to hear a romantic, calm and emotional song, you can’t miss the opportunity to get to know Daylight

Nothing New (Red – Taylor’s Version)

Another sad, but perfect song on this list! Nothing new is heavy and dramatic, but also very necessary. Despite the fact that the melody is relaxing and not upbeat, the lyrics feel like the writer really wanted to get it all off her chest.

The track 23 of Red (Taylor’s Version) is mostly about the challenges of being young and female in a patriarchal and judgemental society. Also, the fact that it features Phoebe Bridgers makes it all the more exciting, since the duet is artistic, harmonious and the two voices fit perfectly!

 Illicit Affairs (Folklore)

The surprise album released during the pandemic times, Folklore, owns big and hidden treasures. For the first time, Taylor tried something different and made songs with fictional stories not based in real experiences. Illicit affairs is one of those cases. The track 10 of the album is about a girl that is living an affair with someone committed, but she is not happy with this situation. The line “You taught me a secret language I can’t speak with anyone else” traduces all the passion but sadness that she is going through! If you haven’t listened to “Illicit affairs” yet, you can’t waste any more time! You will not regret it!

Tolerate It (Evermore)

Do you know that feeling that you love someone more than they love you? Or that you are prioritizing someone that doesn’t care about you the same as you do? Tolerate it is about this. The chorus goes “I know my love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it”.

The song is very deep, sad and you don’t have to be surprised if you cry a little. Also this masterpiece contains one of the best lines that Taylor has ever written: “I made you my temple, my mural, my sky, and now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life”. Very poetical, isn’t it?

Did you find any new songs by Swift that you didn’t know? So go listen to it! It will be worth it!
