Celebrities have a unique ability to reach millions of people with just a single post, speech, or public appearance. Beyond music and entertainment, their platforms can become spaces to raising awareness and bring attention to social issues that often go overlooked.
Many artists have chosen to use their influence to make a difference beyond their careers. But what does it mean for an idol to speak up, and how can their voices shape the way audiences understand the world around them?
Daisy Chain Fields was much more than a festival
In 2026, Olivia Rodrigo, one of the biggest pop-rock voices of our generation, used her stage for a cause. On August 29, she created and performed at Daisy Chain Fields, a one-day festival in Irvine, California, featuring an all-women lineup, and tickets sold out in just 30 minutes. The money raised funds for ten nonprofits that support women and girls, such as Planned Parenthood and Baby2Baby.
The festival raised $10 million, and during the show, Melinda French Gates pledged to match that amount, bringing the total to $20 million, according to the Associated Press. This wasn’t the first time Rodrigo stood up for good causes: her GUTS tour had already raised more than $2 million to charity through Fund 4 Good, her charity project.
In the end, a night of music turned into real help for women and girls. It shows that when an artist asks fans to show up for a cause, they really do. With a large audience of young women, Olivia also uses her platform to keep talking about reproductive rights, raising awareness about such an important topic.
Can one personal story change what people do?
Sharing something as personal as your health takes courage, especially when the whole world is watching. In May 2013, Angelina Jolie wrote an article for The New York Times called “My Medical Choice”, where she shared that she carried a mutation in the BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. She also told everyone that she had undergone a preventive double mastectomy, a procedure to remove both breasts, to prevent the disease.
The reaction was so significant that it became known as the “Angelina Jolie effect”. A study published in The BMJ in 2016 found that BRCA tests in the United States went up 64% in the three weeks after her article, about 4,500 more tests than usual. In the United Kingdom, the number of women referred to genetic clinics more than doubled in the two months that followed.
Thousands of women followed her lead and got tested in just a few weeks. According to the researchers, many of them had a lower risk, which shows that her message reached far beyond the women most likely to carry the mutation.
A YouTuber made a whole country pay attention
In Brazil, one of the biggest examples in recent years didn’t come from a pop star or a Hollywood actress, but from a comedian and youtuber. On August 6, 2025, Felipe Bressanim Pereira, known as Felca, posted a 50-minute video about “adultification”, (adultização in Portuguese), the exposure and sexualization of children and teenagers on social media. In the video, he called attention to influencers who exposed minors in their content, including Hytalo Santos, a former social media influencer.
The video quickly went viral: it had almost 36 million views on YouTube in one week, and the debate soon extended beyond social media and reached the news and Congress. According to the Brazilian NGO SaferNet, reports of online child sexual abuse and exploitation more than doubled, from 770 in the same period of 2024 to 1,651 between August 6 and 12, 2025. Hugo Motta, president of the Chamber of Deputies, thanked Felca publicly and promised to bring the issue to a vote. On August 15, Hytalo Santos was arrested in an investigation that had been open since 2024.
But the biggest consequence came 42 days after the video. On September 17, 2025, President Lula signed Law 15.211, known as ECA Digital, with new rules to protect children and teenagers online, such as linking the accounts of users under 16 to a parent or guardian. The bill had been in Congress since 2022, so Felca’s video didn’t create it, but it sped up its approval.
When Felca chose to use his platform to expose these cases, he helped protect many children, and their childhoods, from the clutches of countless predators who had been taking advantage of the lack of social media regulation regarding the exposure of minors. The impact was tangible, and it went beyond the law: the video also sparked debates across our society, especially among parents and guardians.
What happens when they speak up?
When Olivia Rodrigo, Angelina Jolie and Felca spoke up, things moved: nonprofits got millions of dollars, thousands of women got tested and a bill that had been waiting since 2022 finally became law. Each of them talked about something very different, but all three gave a boost to something that was already there.
A celebrity can’t solve a problem alone, but they can make millions of people look at the same thing at the same time. When that happens, it gets much harder for us, and for those in power, to ignore it. Not every idol chooses silence, and those who speak up show us how far one voice can go when many people are listening.
