No Tricks, Just Treating: 3 Easy Recipes To Get You Into the Halloween Mood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Halloween is one of the most famous holidays in the United States and is very much remembered around the world, mainly for its costumes, pumpkins, witches and children going out on the streets to ask for candy from neighbors. But, more than that, food – as in every typical party – is an essential part of the holiday. That’s why we’ve separated easy recipes, possible to make at home, to enter the Halloween mood, wherever you are!

Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats

True symbol of Halloween, the pumpkin dominates the decorations – and recipes – of the festivities. This candy, one of the most traditional of the holiday, is super fast and practical to make, made to look like a mini pumpkin.

Ingredients

→ 1/4 cup of butter

→ 1 large bag of marshmallows (approximately 40 marshmallows)

→ 6 cups of Rice Krispies

→ Red & Yellow liquid food coloring

→ Mini Rolos

→ Green M&M’s

→ 1/4 cup of cooking oil or melted butter in a small bowl (to keep it from sticking to your hands)

Instructions

1. In a large pot, melt the butter over low heat.

2. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and combined with the butter.

3. Remove from the heat. Add several drops of yellow food colouring, mix it together, then add red food colouring one drop at a time, mixing as you go. Add red and yellow drops until you reach the desired colour. Mix well.

4. Add the Rice Krispies and stir.

5. Coat both sides of your hands with a generous amount of cooking oil or butter, and roll the Rice Krispie mixture into small balls. Set on parchment paper. Oil or butter your hands after each ball.

6. While the balls are still warm, gently press a Mini Rolo into the top of each pumpkin for the stem and add a green M&M beside it as the leaf.

7. Allow to cool until firm.

Bloody Hot Dog Fingers

For those who take Halloween very seriously, here is a recipe for a very peculiar hot dog, in which the sausage looks like a human finger. Some may find it scary, and others may find it disgusting, but anyone who ignores its strange look will taste a really delicious food.

Ingredients

→ 8 hot dogs

→ 8 hot dog buns

→ Ketchup

Preparation

1. Boil a large pot of water.

2. Take the hot dogs and carve them into fingers: To make the fingernails, slice the two sides of the fingernail then straight across the top. Then, make a slightly curved slice for the bottom of the nail bed. Next, take your knife and carefully slice the tiny piece off.

3. To make the knuckles, make one slit along the middle with two crescent-shaped slits directly above and below. Then, halfway between the knuckle and the nail, make two crescent slits. Repeat at the very bottom.

4. Boil the hot dogs for 4 to 5 minutes until cooked

5. Place each finger-shaped hot dog into a hot dog bun loaded with ketchup. For an extra creepy effect, be sure to smear some ketchup on the bottom of each “severed finger” and add more to the top of the bun.

Spooky Cookies

The recipes with edible eyes are very famous this season. You can create anything with them, just use your creativity! Here is how to incorporate this spooky sprinkle into the traditional – and beloved – cookies.

Ingredients

→ 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, room temperature

→ 1/2 cup of granulated sugar

→ 1/2 cup dark brown sugar

→ 1 large egg, preferably room temperature

→ 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

→ 1 cup of all-purpose flour

→ 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp. Dark Cocoa Powder

→ 1 teaspoon of baking soda

→ 1/4 teaspoon of salt

→ 2 Tbsp. of milk

→ 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

→ Candy eyeballs for topping the cookies

→ Optional: black food coloring

Instructions

1. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the butter and sugars. Optional: add black food coloring to get a deeper shade of black in the cookies.

3. Beat together on medium-high speed, for 2 to 3 minutes or until the dough turns light and fluffy. Blend in the egg and vanilla, scrape down the bowl if needed.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

5. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients in the mixer on low speed just until incorporated.

6. Mix in the milk on the lowest speed and fold in the chocolate chips.

7. Roll about 2 tablespoons of dough into balls and place on the baking sheets. Flatten slightly. Top cookies with candy eyeballs.

8. Place cookie sheet in freezer for 10-15 minutes.

9. Bake at 350˚ F for 10 to11 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
