If you feel inspired by stories about young people who trilled a way on their on and now are very successful in their business and doing their “thing”, prepare yourself to love Girlboss, the new series of Netflix. It was created by Kay Cannon (The Pitch Perfect) and inspired by the real life story of Sophia Amoruso – who created almost from nothing the millionaire brand Nasty Gal. She signs the executive production along with the great Charlize Theron.

The show exposes all the flaws and the brightside of an entire generation, more specific, the millennials. Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) plays Sophia Marlowe, a young girl in her 20’s, who has all these controversies: she is spoiled, crazy and irresponsible, but also very brave. Be aware that you might hate her sometimes, but it’s impossible not to surrender to her bright ideas and to her persistence to chase her goal, which actually is what is missing in most of young people nowadays.

Other characters help Marlowe to build the imagine of caricature that the show has, sometimes almost above the tone, like the amazing Ellie Reed playing Sophia’s best friend Annie. Together, both of them create the best lines of the show, like “I love you, in case I die”, that they say to each other all the time.

A lot of moments from the series bring us back to events from the early 2000’s, as the time Britney Spears went crazy and almost attacked a paparazzi with an umbrella, or (maybe the best one) the moment when the characters are watching the last episode from the third season of The O.C – when Marissa Cooper dies – and they classify it as “the most significant TV event of our lifetime”. Among with very funny situations that Sophia puts herself into, there is a little bit of drama that helps the audience to understand her personality and her place in the world.

The show has 13 episodes and it’s focused on Marlowe building Nasty Gal, which is very different from the book that Sophia Amoruso wrote in 2015. Besides telling some crazy stories that we can see on Netflix’s show, she gives a lot of business advice. It’s about a mature Sophia, very different from the show, that has a big business to run and does not play on her work time. In the book, there are chapters like “Money Looks Better in the Bank than on Your Feet” and “Taking Care of (Your) Business” and motivational quotes like: “A girlboss knows when to throw punches and when to roll with them” and “The straight and narrow is not the only path to success”.

If you only want to see the fun part of these stories, the show will be very entertaining. However, if you want to know a little bit more about the creation of a successful business, you won’t regret reading the Girlboss book. If you do that, you will see that girls can be crazy, but extremely smart and capable of doing great things in this world.
