7 Reasons Why “This Is Us” Will Be Your New Favorite TV Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Three people are born on the same day. They are turning 36. However, what do they have in common?

It’s odd to declare your unconditional love for a new TV series right from the beginning. But believe me, you’ll do that with This Is Us. Right from the first episode, which is 43 minutes long, you’ll go to the ‘80s and back, with captivating characters and a lot – a lot – of emotion. If you’re still not convinced, here are a few reasonable motives why you should be:

1. The first season is complete!

No, you don’t have to wait anxiously each week for a new episode! The first season’s18 full episodes were already exhibited and can be checked online.

2. The show is already embraced internationally

It was a successful project before its debut. The trailer, available on Facebook, got over 15 million views after 48 hours online! Its achievements won’t stop there: hours after the pilot episode, both second and third seasons were confirmed by NBC. Before the season finale, the show had already yielded three Golden Globe indications, for best actress in a supporting role on TV – to Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz –, and best drama TV show, bringing NBC back to the award show 10 years later.

3. The screenplay is surprising and calculated

Right from the beginning, there’s the realization that the show will surprise you. The pieces fit perfectly and the plot is well done. We’re trying to stay away from spoilers, because the surprise is inevitable when everything seems to make sense. We can only tell you that there’s a shocking revelation right at the first episode that will make you crazy for the next ones.

4. The cast is too good to be true

Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore make a full show. Their acting is flawless. Jack, played by Ventimiglia, is probably the most beloved character by fans. He cares, he tries, he wants to make his dear ones happy, he wants to be his own self. Rebecca, played by Moore, is another dear character: we can see a lot from ourselves in her. She has doubts, she has dreams, she protects, she is strong. Not only the leading roles, but the supporting roles are incredible. Randall, Kevin, Kate, Beth, William… You’re going to forget this is a show and you’re going to take every single character as a friend of yours.

5. Diversity is represented

The main characters step up to diversity: there are black people, fat people, LGBT Community members. The most incredible of it all, is the way This Is Us talks about it – there’s always a personal speech behind it. Racial issues and fat shaming cases are emphasized in several episodes. However, it’s all about the point of view: difficulties are shown and felt, but also the possibility of dealing with all of this and still find happiness.

6. Deep speeches

Depression, death, obesity, bullying, financial issues, confidence, “who am I?”. Because it is so important to talk about it and we feel like not everything on TV does – especially in the right way –, so… we must talk about it. It’s deep, but it’s also talking about being human. “This is real. This is complicated. This is life.”

7. The right amount of humor and drama

It will make you laugh! It will make you cry! Besides that, This Is Us is so well balanced that every moment is captivating in their own way.
